Renata Zarazua is the expected favorite to win this quarterfinal battle with Panna Udvardy, and the line setters have a -170 posted on the Mexican native to advance to the semis.

The Mexican native hasn’t lost a set in Bari, and should she win the title in this W125 event we might see Renata break into the top 100 in the WTA Rankings. Currently ranked 102nd on tour, Zarazua is 12 – 8 on clay but hasn’t put a strong run together on the dirt this season.

Zarazua came up with a few nice wins over Golubic and Stearns in the early rounds of the Paris Challenger event until Mayar Sherif ended that run. Madison Keys sent Renata home in her first match at the French Open, opening the door to get into this Challenger in Italy.

Panna Udvardy is ranked 132nd on tour, and it is no mystery to anyone what she considers her best surface  I don’t think she would play on a hard court or grass if she didn’t need to for sponsorship reasons or to just get some work in.

Panna was born on a clay court somewhere in Hungary, although I cannot confirm or deny that, HA! Udvardy can surely provide an upset win against a mediocre Zarazua who tends to lose her way at the wrong times of many matches.

Let’s not forget that Zarazua was 0 – 5 in her last five hard court showings before Bogata, and some of her losses on clay this year have been losses as a favorite to win. The losses to Jorge and Paquet stand out to me, and I think Udvardy has much more fight than either of them.

Udvardy is 15 – 9 on clay in 2024, and she only played 11 matches on hard courts before getting on the dirt. Panna loves clay, as evident from her last four years on tour. that includes a 62 – 15 record in 2021 on the dirt.

Udvardy’s first two wins in Bari have been against ladies ranked outside the top 225 in the world. The Hungarian native needs a win against an opponent like Zarazua to prove she can compete at a higher level no matter the surface.

Renata and Panna have officially met twice on the WTA tour, and as you might expect both games were played on clay. (They have also played four exhibition matches which we won’t factor in)

On November 11 last year, Udvardy earned a straight-sets win over Zarazua at Charleston in the U.S., 6 – 2, 7 – 6.

At Florianopolis in Brazil, the pair met 10 days later and Zarazua returned the favor with a straight-sets win, 7 – 5, 6 – 2.
