I am not trying to sound like a broken record but I have been constantly trying to pick out the matches that have potential to go the distance. We are 7 – 1 this week and 5 – 0 with Over 2.5 Sets prop at the Australian Open and that trend will continue today.

Putintseva and Kasatkina met twice last season and guess what? The pair of matches went the distance as each found a win against each other. I’ll get more into that later but I foresee another lengthy battle happening here and I have no issue putting another Over 2.5 Sets prop on the board.

Putintseva dropped the first set in the opening round of the Australian Open against Elina Avanesyan and found her way to the second round where she faced Yafan Wang. Wang was dismantled in 1:14 by Putintseva and Kasatkina has plowed past her first two opponents with ease.

Kasatkina sent Viktoriya Tomova packing in an hour and hasn’t spent much energy to reach this stage of the first Major Tournament of the 2025 campaign. 

I foresee both players taking a set and it will take a third set to declare the victor of this third-round affair between Putintseva and Kasatkina. Kasatkina will be motivated as an underdog against the 23rd-ranked Kazakh native so don’t be surprised to see her in the fourth round.

YULIA PUTINTSEVA RECENT FORM

Yulia Putintseva is competing in her third Australian Open and has never surpassed the third round. With third-round showings at the 2016, 2020, and 2021 versions of the Major Tournament, Putintseva had an 11 – 12 record at Melbourne Park before the two wins this year.

Putintseva has yet to pass the quarterfinal stage of any Major Tournament but is 6 – 2 in 2025 following up a 40-win 2024 campaign. 

DARIA KASATKINA RECENT FORM

Daria Kasatkina has also never surpassed the third round of the Australian Open and had been knocked out of the first round of the last four Australian Opens until this year.

Kasatkina is 5 – 2 in 2025 and is following up a 40-win season with a fifth straight campaign producing a winning record.

PUTINTSEVA VS KASATKINA HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Putintseva and Kasatkina have met three times on the WTA tour and Kasatkina holds a 2 – 1 in the series.

Last year the two met twice and each found a win in matches that lasted three sets. The first meeting between them was in 2018 at Wimbledon and Kasatkina won that affair in straight sets.

The winner of this match will face Emma Navarro or Ons Jabeur in the fourth round of the Australian Open.
