Stanislas Wawrinka vs Dino Prizmic Prediction: In Form Veteran Too Much Indoors For Underpowered Prospect
- Prediction: Wawrinka -2.5 Games
- Best Odds: 1.89
- Bookmaker: Pinnacle
- Stakes: 3/10
Odds updated at 2:00 am UK Time on October 31st, 2024.
Give me the veteran who is making a late-season climb up the rankings against a youngster that I think is a tad overvalued and certainly hasn’t lived up to the hype he’s received in recent years.
Wawrinka has been nearly untouchable on serve of late against much tougher competition, and though he may not be returning all that well, he hasn’t played many players who struggle to generate a lot of power on their serve and first forehand.
I have this as a 3.5-game handicap and will happily get involved at -2.5.
Stanislas Wawrinka Recent Form
After a lot of close losses in recent months, Wawrinka had dropped out of the top 150 in the world rankings, prompting people to ask whether he was considering retiring.
He is in his late 30s and would likely have to rely on wild cards or head down to the Challenger circuit to accrue the necessary points to get back onto the main tour.
Well, he’s said he has no plans of retiring next season and he’s now playing a Challenger 125 in the Slovakian capital.
Prior to this week, we’d seen some signs of him turning things around. He had a nice week in Stockholm (made the semis) before running out of gas against Tommy Paul and played Ben Shelton as closely as he could in a narrow 6-7, 5-7 defeat. His last three losses have all come against players in the top-35.
He has far more firepower at his disposal and he’s in better form than his young opponent in this one. He may not have the best return game anymore, but with Prizmic not exactly a huge server, I don’t think a one-break margin of victory is too much to ask.
Dino Prizmic Recent Form
After much hype in the last few years, the still-just-19-year-old has had a rough year on the pro circuit. He’s just 16-15 overall across surfaces, with plenty of early exits against guys he should’ve beaten routinely.
Even in recent months, he has a semifinal run in Mouilleron-le-Captif and a quarterfinal appearance in Porto at the Challenger level. Other than those two tournaments, Prizmic hadn’t made a quarterfinal since February.
He’s a tad underpowered and at times this season, he’s looked as though his body has let him down.
With Wawrinka in form and still hitting with the power that made him one of the top players in the game at one point, I find it hard to believe Prizmic pulls off this win more than 40% of the time.
