Adam Walton vs Tristan Schoolkate Prediction: Walton Far More Solid and Reliable of the Aussies

  • Prediction: Walton -2.5 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.93
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as at 11:30 am UK Time on March 18th, 2025. Odds may now differ.

Though these two are somewhat similar players in that they’re ranked within 30 spots on either side of the 100 mark and both prefer quicker conditions (while also both being Aussies), I do think Walton has done a bit more to prove he belongs at this level and I also think he distinguishes himself in two ways on court that give him the advantage and make any handicap of three games or better value.

The first is that he’s more consistent from the baseline and dependable from a physicality standpoint. I’d also make the case he moves better along the baseline within rallies, which should be crucial, since extending points is something he also does well.

The other is his return game. As much as Schoolkate has progressed in recent times, I’m still not huge on his ability to consistently generate pressure on return against decent opposition.

Adam Walton Recent Form

I want to preface the Walton form analysis by saying that a lot of his success came in a pair of Challengers in Brisbane that took place after the Australian Open. Those are nice results, but ones I don’t think one can read into all that much.

As for the rest of the season? He’s played a lot of good players that simply have a bit too much to their games for him. Denis Shapovalov and Marcos Giron, for instance, just have too much pop on their serves and groundstrokes for him to keep pace with and are both strong enough athletes to pressure him on serve.

Learner Tien is an ascending prospect that is extremely tough to win points against in slower conditions like Delray Beach.

When things speed up, Walton is actually competitive, even in losses to better competition. With Miami’s court having been much quicker since the move to Hard Rock Stadium, I like his chances to get through this match and perhaps do some damage in the opening round, depending on his draw.

Tristan Schoolkate Recent Form

It’s hard to really peg down whether the 24-year-old is in good form or not. I think the fact that he enters this tournament at a career high ranking is a sign of progression and strong play. He won a Challenger Tour tournament in Brisbane as well and made a pair of decent runs in New Delhi and Bengaluru.

Problem is, the Brisbane title was after the Australian Open when most quality players had left Australia (similar issue to Walton in terms of quality of opponent) and Indian Challengers don’t tend to draw the best fields either.

In California he lost in qualifying to Ethan Quinn and then in Cap Cana he was downed from 6-1 up by an older Fabio Fognini. Even in his first match in qualifying here, he needed three sets to close out Stefano Napolitano – a player that hadn’t been seen on the professional tennis circuit since September and who hadn’t won a match since the U.S. Open.

Schoolkate has a nice serve that should enjoy the conditions here, and he is a quick court player by nature, so he has that going for him, but his opponent also plays his best in quicker conditions and is a much more competent server and more consistent. I struggle to see what differentiates Schoolkate from Walton in a positive light and that’s why I’m opposing him in this match.

Adam Walton vs Tristan Schoolkate H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have played one another six times and they’re deadlocked at 3-3. The last two meetings actually went the way of Schoolkate, but each of those took three sets, while Walton’s pair of wins in 2024 came in a more convincing straight sets manner.
