American native Caty McNally arrives as the favorite to advance in Section 1 of the top half of the bracket. However, a pissed-off Aryna Sabalenka awaits the winner of this clash after losing the final at Indian Wells.

Caty McNally is favored at -135 to defeat Viktoriya Tomova on Tuesday at Miami Gardens as the main draw of this WTA1000 event begins bright and early. An 11 AM start time for a handful of affairs will bring in nice crowds and the weather will cooperate all week in the Sunshine State.
Tomova and McNally surely see that Sabalenka is waiting in the wings to destroy someone after losing the Indian Wells final against Mirra Andreeva this weekend.
We’ll cross that bridge later, but I am taking the underdog to upset McNally with a reasonable offer of +115 on the Bulgarian native to advance and take on Sabalenka in the second round.
McNally was granted a protected entry to the main draw of this WTA1000 event. The Cincinnati native is using her protected ranking for a third time this season, and neither of the first two has worked out too much. McNally used her PR to gain entry into the Australian Open and Varvara Gracheva sent her packing in the first round.
McNally tried again at Indian Wells and won one game before another loss, and this attempt as a PR entrant will work out to…Another failed attempt to get far in a WTA1000 event.
Tomova hasn’t been playing much better this season, so why do I have confidence in her to advance past McNally? Not that either remember, but they met in 2019 and Tomova pounded McNally in her first season as a pro.
That was a long time ago and won’t have much influence on the match other than giving Tomova some confidence that she has defeated McNally once before.
McNally being favored at -135 also throws me off because this should be an even-odds bet on the winner of this first-round match. The match being played in the United States doesn’t give the American a better chance to win, because that’s just geography.
The two losses to Maria Sakkari and two wins against Olga Danilovic don’t help boost anyone’s confidence in a bet with Tomova. I am honestly fading McNally because the line setters want to lead you to believe being in Miami will help the Americans win. It won’t so give me Tomova to provide an early-round upset at the Miami Open.
