Veronika Kudermetova vs Liudmila Samsonova prediction, Picks, Odds, H2H - 6/18/24

Veronika Kudermetova eased through qualifying to land a first-round battle with Liudmila Samsonova on Tuesday at the Berlin Ladies Open. Kudermetova has plowed through her first two opponents in qualifying, so let’s get Ej’s Kudermetova vs Samsonova prediction featuring odds at -115. 

The two opponents will square off for the sixth time in three years as they have become very familiar with each other in recent years. 

Samsonova enters the match as the favorite at -145 after hoisting the Hertogenbosch hardware to begin her grass campaign.

I would say that Samsonova’s grass season has gotten off to a decent start. A 5 – 0 run to the Libema Open title in the Netherlands has her playing the favorite role on Tuesday against qualifier Veronika Kudermetova. 

To my surprise, I assumed when the -145 line came out that we would see a -3 on the Samsonova handicap but Piinalce is posting -115 on the -1.5 games spread.

Samsonova’s path to that title wasn’t filled with high-profile names outside of the win over two-time defending champ Alexandrova in the semis. Bianca Andreescu was a game away from winning that final up 5 – 4 in the third set, but Liudmila won the final three games to lift the trophy and remain undefeated on grass this year.

Samsonova now has two career grass titles because she won the Berlin Open in 2021. Danilo Pizzorno deserves a lot of credit for retooling Samsonova’s game back to where she was in 2021 as the last two years have been full of mixed results. 

I find it odd that Samsonova has advanced to a 15th ranking on the WTA Tour with a 15 – 13 record in 2024. Without that 5 – 0 run at Hertogenbosch, she was 10 – 13 this year and not what we call in form.

Kudermetova needed something positive to happen when grass season kicked in, and she has easily dismantled her first two opponents in Germany. Still, with a 10 – 14 record this season, I don’t see this match even being close. 

My bonus bet is the 2 – 0 Correct Set prop with Samsonova at +175, and my main bet is the -1.5 games handicap at -115. Samsonova will convincingly win this match.

VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA RECENT FORM

Kudermetova has been underachieving all season, and I don’t think it will get any easier against a hot Samsonova in Berlin. Veronika has fallen to 35th in the rankings after splashing the top 10 in 2022 but she is 10 – 4 on grass over the last two years.

The 1 – 4 record against opponents ranked outside the top 100 is a growing concern, and she faces a 15th-ranked Samsonova in the first round.

LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA RECENT FORM

Samsonova being 5 – 0 to start the grass campaign about sums up her recent form. A title at Hertogenbosch now gives her a chance to start 2024 6 – 0 on grass, and she is the favorite on Tuesday to do so.

Liudmila was 10 – 1 on grass in 2021 when she won the Berlin Open title but she went 5 – 7 over the last two years on the surface entering 2024.

KUDERMETOVA VS SAMSONOVA H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Kudermetova has earned three wins from five meetings against Samsonova.

The ladies first met here in Berlin during Samsonova’s run to the title in 2021, so we know how that final eight match worked out.

Kudermetova returned the favor with a win over Samsonova in October of 2021 to level the series and Veronika won their only clash in 2022, also a match played in Berlin.

Last year, Samsonova won their first battle in Dubai early in February, and Kudermetova earned a victory in Zhuhai, China in October.
