Kudermetova was ranked 9th at this point of the season two years ago on her way to wrapping up a 39 – 20 2022 campaign at 25 years old. It will take a monumental run for Veronika to get a level record this year, and things didn’t look good early in the first-round match the other day.

Kudermetova struggled to get past 601st-ranked Shuai Zhang who has lost 24 straight games. It was 4 – 4 in the opening frame and the second set went to 6 – 3, and now she’ll face 15th-ranked Samsonova in the second round.

I don’t care how well they know each other or the history between them (Kudermetova 4 – 2) because all that matters is how these two match up today. This isn’t two years ago and Samsonova should be licking her chops at this opportunity to get past someone she’s struggled with before.

Kudermetova probably can’t even remember being in North America because all she did was play four matches and lose three of them while she was here. Getting out of here won’t help her game today and Samsonova is going to kick her ass all over the court en route to the quarters.

Samsonova is where Kudermetova was at 25 years old hovering around the top 10 and taking a strong finish to 9th. Currently ranked 15th, the 26 – 20 record could improve, and she is only 12 – 12 on hardcourts this season.

With a strong finish to the campaign, Liudmila could finish her first campaign with a winning record on all three surfaces (6 – 5 clay, 8 – 3 grass).
