ATP Wimbledon BEST BET: BAUTISTA AGUT VS BALAZS

Tuesday, June 28th, TBD

It’ ‘s always tough to back a total games under total on the men’s side as low as 27.5 at a major – especially on the quicker grass courts of Wimbledon.

That said, every situation and match is its own entity, and Roberto Bautista Agut is certainly poised to do just that in his first-round encounter with Hungarian Attila Balazs.

The 33-year-old is still trying to find his best form at the moment, having been out for an extended period due to injury. With just six matches played at the professional level since the 2021 Australian Open – all on clay and the vast majority of those on the Challenger circuit – Balazs isn’t anywhere near his best physically.

That spells trouble against Bautista Agut, as the Spanish veteran is a strong grass-court player (he places inside the tour’s top-15 in terms of grass-court Elo ratings) and even more worrisome for Balazs, he’s a strong returner of serve.

Even at his best, Balazs has never been a fan of the lower-bouncing, faster grass courts. He prefers the higher bounce, doesn’t possess much power and plays a defensive style that isn’t well suited to the surface.

Furthermore, he has only ever played on grass in Wimbledon qualifiers (he’s in the main draw thanks to his protected ranking), avoiding the lawn-like courts at every turn other than the sport’s crown jewel.

Even in those qualifying matches against much lesser opposition, he only managed to hold his serve about 73% of the time, had an ace rate below 3% and didn’t even reach 65% of points won behind his first serve.

He’s also yet to play on the surface yet this year at the professional level and has struggled on his preferred clay courts at the Challenger level in the matches he has played.

Going up against one of the sport’s best, on a surface, he enjoys playing on and has a 5-2 record on this season (losing only to Daniil Medvedev and in a third-set tiebreak in the championship match in Mallorca), leads me to believe that opposing Balazs by taking the under 27.5 total games is the right move in this one.

  • Selection: Under 27.5 games
  • Odds: 1.92 (Marathon Bet)
  • Stakes: 2/10
