As I’ve mentioned this season a few times, Bronzetti has to be one of the most confounding players from a betting perspective of the year.
In some matches, I’ve been pretty surprised at how much respect she’s getting in the markets, while in others I feel like her progression on hard courts isn’t given nearly enough credit.
This match falls into the latter category, with the Italian struggling a bit for form this season, but actually holding her own against players of Townsend’s calibre.
She has a strong, consistent baseline game and her aggression on the forehand wing has taken a step forward – a big step to add a dimension to her game that had been lacking in the past.
Townsend is pretty strong in her own right, and her lefty game can be tough, as she possesses decent variety, a smart tactical approach and a decent lefty serve.
Taylor Townsend Recent Form
The world No. 72 has had a mediocre start to her year. She has eight wins on the season, but five of them have come in qualifying draws, and she has a fair few early exits in main draws.
While she can dictate play and uses spins and slices to decent effect, she doesn’t have the overwhelming pace on her groundstrokes to make up for the number of errors she’s hit so far to start her season.
She has struggled to get past consistent players from the baseline, with Jessica Bouzas Maneiro handing her a loss, Magda Linette and Fernanda Contreras Gomez pushing her to a decider and Laura Pigossi keeping her fairly close in each of the two sets they played.
Bronzetti has the ability to drag rallies out like most of those players and is probably better than most of them.
Lucia Bronzetti Recent Form
The win-loss record may not be the best so far for Bronzetti, but it’s worth noting that the overwhelming majority of her losses have come against top-35 opponents and in a part of the season that doesn’t suit her.
Though she’s improved on the surface, I’m sure she’s still looking forward to the tour shifting to clay courts.
Even still, she’s managed to amass wins against the likes of Angelique Kerber, Anhelina Kalinina, Magdalena Frech, and Daria Saville this season.
I think this is actually a fairly manageable match for the underdog, even though the markets are pricing her as a decent-sized outsider.
Townsend vs Bronzetti H2H – Stat of the Match
These two have yet to play at the professional level. In terms of blended hard court elo ratings, we can see that Bronzetti has actually managed to close the gap to under 60 points on Townsend, despite not being anywhere near close to being a natural on these courts.
