Even as a rather large favorite in this matchup, I still think there’s some value to be had in trusting and backing the Argentine, who is rounding into form at just the right time.

After reaching his third career ATP final in Lyon last week, the 24-year-old bounced back from losing the set against talented Frenchman Arthur Cazaux in brilliant fashion, blitzing him off the court in sets two, three, and four.

Now he plays a bigger server and hitter who is far more at home on hard courts and quicker surfaces. Rinderknech had a nice opening round, but he played a Challenger Tour player with very little experience on the dirt who was only in the main draw thanks to the fact that he earned the Australian reciprocal wild card.

Even then, Adam Walton grew into that match as it wore on, finding more holds of serve and eventually breaking through, despite struggling a lot with the bounces and the different trajectory of the ball coming off the court relative to his preferred hard courts.

Now bring in Etcheverry who is far more talented, has more weapons, and is much more proficient on the surface and I think we’ll see Rinderknech run into trouble. Our Etcheverry vs Rinderknech prediction is for Etcheverry to cover the handicap.

Read on for more expert insights.

Tomas Martin Etcheverry Recent Form

Etcheverry has saved his best tennis of the season for the right time. After a deep run last week, it’s clear he’s brimming with confidence entering the year’s second grand slam. He was caught off guard early on against Cazaux but rebounded beautifully and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him make a third deep run of the European clay season this week.

His serve is strong, he hits a heavy ball and he can generate offense from the forehand wing.

He’s also much more athletic than his French counterpart here and is right at home on the slower clay courts.

It’s hard to see an area in which Rinderknech outdoes the world No. 29 outside of raw power on the serve and forehand (which aren’t the most useful tools in very slow conditions).

Arthur Rinderknech Recent Form

As well as Rinderknech playing in front of a supportive home crowd, it’s important to keep the level of competition he played in the back of one’s mind though and it’s also worth keeping in mind we don’t want to overreact to such a performance.

I’m skeptical as to whether he can replicate that performance though. For starters, there’s the fact that his backhand was working for large portions of that opener. He was hitting with a low margin, trying to hit with angles and hit them fairly flat, leaving himself less margin for error and it worked. Tough to believe that’s sustainable on a slower surface like clay.

Then there’s the obvious fact that his competition is much tougher this time around. Not only will he have a tough time sustaining that level on the backhand, but he likely won’t get nearly as much time to set those shots up against someone with much more pace to their groundstrokes.

Outside of an incredibly high first serve percentage (again, tough to sustain), I struggle to see the path to victory here for the Frenchman.

Etcheverry vs Rinderknech H2H – Stat of the Match

The lone match these two have played came on clay just a few weeks ago. It was a straight set Etcheverry win, but it was a very close straight sets victory, as just one break of serve separated them between both sets.
