Though we have three events on the main ATP circuit this week, I want to look at the Learner Tien vs Benjamin Bonzi match from the Chicago Men’s Challenger at the lower level for our second preview for Monday’s action.

Bonzi’s win probability is slightly above 50%, while Tien is the slightest of favourites at 1.89 odds. The handicap is 0 games and the total games line is 22.

Our Tien vs Bonzi prediction is for Bonzi to win.

Learner Tien vs Benjamin Bonzi Prediction: Trust More Established Player in Challenger Matchup

  • Prediction: Bonzi to win
  • Best Odds: 1.93
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds updated at 3:15 am UK Time on July 22nd, 2024.

The classic example of whether you want to trust a player in absolutely blistering form entering a match or someone who is much more proven over the long term and is probably the better ball striker and likely to dictate play.

As much as I’m eager to see where Tien’s career takes him, considering his underpowered but craft game style, I’m sceptical about his chances in a match against the Frenchman who has been succeeding at this level for a long time and who is finally starting to turn his form around.

If Tien was entering on the heater he’s been on and Bonzi was still struggling mightily to find victories at any level, then perhaps I could understand the market believing this one being a closer matchup.

I can’t get there though and still have Bonzi clear of his teenage counterpart.

Learner Tien Recent Form

25 straight wins. That’s the red-hot form of the young gun from the United States coming into this. Now, as you have probably gathered from previous articles, I’m big on looking at context and the quality of wins and losses.

Tien has won 80% of those 25 matches at the ITF Tour level, with almost none of those wins being remotely relevant to this contest.

The Bloomfield Hills Challenger he won saw him beat a strong opponent or two, but it wasn’t the most impressive series of wins either, with all five of the victories coming in deciding sets.

Finally, he was 4-2 at this level prior to Bloomfield Hills and those were two of the weakest Challenger fields of the year. Losses to the likes of Mitchell Krueger and Sebastian Fanselow on slow hard courts in Indian Wells kind of illustrate the limitations to his game decently.

This is one of the best players he’s come up against this season and I’m not sure a winning streak by itself is worthy of giving him an equal chance against someone like Bonzi.

Benjamin Bonzi Recent Form

It’s impossible to deny the fact that since hurting himself in Monte Carlo over a year ago, Bonzi has had a really tough time finding his footing. The fact that he may not have the biggest game and as a former top-50 player was playing ATP Tour events week-in, week-out probably contributed to that, but he was also far too error prone for a long time.

From April of 2023 to March of 2024, the 28-year-old made just three quarterfinal appearances at any level. Since then, he’s made three semifinal runs or better, winning a title in Winnipeg a few weeks ago.

Much more comfortable on quicker courts and in quicker conditions where his game plays up, Bonzi is looking to make a push for a return to the top-100.

He should have time to set his shots up and though he isn’t the biggest ball striker in the world, he’s certainly going to be able to dictate play as much as he wants against the young lefty in this one.

Learner Tien vs Benjamin Bonzi H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first time the two have played one another. Great test for the on fire American.
