Thiem vs Gasquet Prediction: Gasquet Undervalued Against Thiem in Battle of Struggling Veterans

  • Prediction: Gasquet to win
  • Best Odds: 2.20
  • Bookmaker: Bet365
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 1:30 am UK Time on April 4th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

It’s a battle of two players that I’ve been opposing in the betting markets a decent amount in recent times, as the oft-injured Thiem takes on the aging Gasquet.

Here’s the catch, though both have dropped down to the Challenger Tour level in the last month, only Gasquet has been picking up wins. As much as the veteran Frenchman has lost the ability to generate much offense, he’s shown he still has gas in the tank to play longer matches and the smarts to pull the ball around the court as if he had it on a string.

Finally, Thiem has not been healthy of late. His only wins in months have come against other out-of-form players and an upstart talent as a 1.03 favorite at Davis Cup. He even admitted recently his wrist is not at 100% and that he would be monitoring it closely week by week.

Yet we find Gasquet as the underdog here. Perhaps Thiem isn’t as hurt as it seems, but his first match this week wasn’t all that impressive and I’ll side with Gasquet at nice underdog odds. Our Gasquet vs Thiem prediction is for Gasquet to win.

Dominic Thiem Recent Form

Since pushing Felix Auger Aliassime at the Australian Open and making it seem like he may be ready to have a big 2024, the Austrian has been downright awful.

Now that he’s made it clear his wrist has been bothering him, we know why that is, but that’s simply an explanation, not a refutation. It also simply reinforces why I think it’s smart to oppose him in this match.

Thiem’s lone wins since Australia were against up-and-comer Michael Agwi (the aforementioned 1.03 odds favorite match) by just a single break of serve, a Filip Krajinovic who is 12-21 since the start of 2023 and has fallen outside of the world’s top-400 and Maximilian Marterer, who has been one of the most disappointing in the top-100 through the first quarter of the season.

Even that last match saw Thiem get off to a hot start and then lose the second set and get over the line by a close margin in the decider. It was a cacophony of errors from Marterer (whose forehand has done nothing but produce errors all season) that helped him get there and his ability to generate the explosive groundstrokes we’re used to seeing from him was noticeably absent.

I can’t have him as a clear favorite in this match, even against someone on the decline in their own right like Gasquet.

Richard Gasquet Recent Form

It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that the 37-year-old has slowed down a bit in recent times. He still has his silky smooth groundstrokes and the ability to move them around the court beautifully, but the finishing power and ability to hit through his shots and keep his opponent on the back foot has regressed.

He’s reached the point where he knows the best course forward for him is to drop down to the Challenger level where his intelligent play and consistency from the baseline serve him well.

He reached the final of a tournament in Manama in February and then the quarters in Murcia, Spain a few weeks ago, only losing to the rising Pablo Llamas Ruiz in a close third set.

This week he’s entered into the main draw as a lucky loser after losing to his compatriot, Lucas Pouille, from a set up in the final round of qualifying.

I’m not a fan of his current level, but I do think he’s still a solid professional player, while Thiem has shown he may need another spell away from the game to get back to 100% before making one more push to rise up the rankings.

Dominic Thiem vs Richard Gasquet H2H – Stat of the Match

Thiem leads the head-to-head between the two 3-2 (though Gasquet has a win at the exhibition Ultimate Tennis Showdown from a few years ago).

I’m not sure how much any matches in this head-to-head series matter much though with both having declined a bit and Thiem entering this one with question marks surrounding his wrist.

It’d probably be wise not to weigh the previous matchups between the two all that much considering the circumstances in this matchup.
