I think all of us are concerned about Tauson’s back giving out again, as it caused her to quit her opening match in Madrid against Sramkova. That came as a bit of a surprise after reaching the Finals in Portugal, albeit a loss to Lamens leaving her a runner-up in the event. 

So far, so good! I watched her match with Saville yesterday and I didn’t see any signs of her back causing her to slouch or catch her breath. She has looked great through her first three wins in Rome, and unless that back gives out I think she can advance past Kalinskaya on Friday.

The line setters don’t even have Kalinskaya favored, so it is -110 on either Tauson or Kalinskaya to win this match and advance. Since that is the case, I have Tauson moving on to face the winner of the match between Svitolina and Errani in the third round of Section 8.

Speaking of Sara Errani, Kalinskaya has only played three matches on clay this season, and one of those results is a loss to Errani in Stuttgart. Sara Beijak humiliated Kalinskaya out of Madrid to follow up the loss to Errani in Germany… How is the clay season going for Anna? So far, NOT so good!

Because of her hard court season going so well, Kalinskaya has jumped in ranking from 76 to 26 since the end of the 2023 campaign. She might be giving back some of those spots with her clay results, as this will likely end up being another loss to the Dane in Rome.

I have Tauson advancing past Kalinskaya, and I will tell you now that she will win her third-round battle with either Svitolina or Errani. As long as her back holds up, Clara can win games on this surface, and she has proven that in a short time as a pro.

Tauson improved to 33 – 16 on clay since 2020 with her first-round win over Saville on Thursday.

I mentioned yesterday that Tauson had won 10 matches in straight sets since the 2023 French Open, and she made it 11 after sweeping Saville off the court, 6 – 2, 6 – 3. 

ANNA KALINSKAYA RECENT FORM

Kalinskaya lost two of her three matches on clay in 2024, and the last time she was in Rome an injury cut her tourney short.

Although Anna was 7 – 3 on clay in 2023, she is 14 – 20 on clay since 2020.
