Clay court tennis is back, and the women’s tour is off to Charleston, South Carolina in the United States and the Colsanitas Openin the Colombian capital of Bogotá.

Let’s look at the Tatjana Maria vs Anna Bondar rematch from last week in Mexico and why this week’s match may end up with a different result.

Bondar’s win probability is 50% while Maria is favoured to win at 1.87 odds. The handicap is 0.5 games and the total games line is 22.

Our Maria vs Bondar prediction is for Maria to win.

There are a few tournaments out there where past results mean more than the average event, and the extreme altitude makes the WTA tournament in Bogota one of them.

Elevated conditions mean thinner air, so there are two things that become more valued than tournaments played at sea level.

The first is the first serve being more valuable. The thinner air means powerful serves travel even more quickly and take more time away from the returner.

The other is the ability to keep the ball in play. Errors come more easily as the ball can be even tougher to control, so those that play with more margin for error tend to fare better.

These two things both favour the veteran from Germany. It’s why she’s the two-time defending champion of this event. Even though Bondar beat her last week in Mexico, Maria managed to take the opening set 6-0. I’m backing her to exact revenge this week.

Read on for more expert insights.

Tatjana Maria Recent Form

Maria’s unconventional game style of a big serve but slice-heavy game from the baseline is one that can rack up wins at lower levels, but struggles to compete at the highest levels. It’s another reason that Bogota – which is a WTA 250, but has one of the weaker fields you’ll see – tends to be fertile ground for her.

It’s why the recent form (which hasn’t been great) doesn’t tend to matter as much for me this week at a tournament that suits her well. I’ve been opposing Maria a bit this year, but I do believe that in the right circumstances and with her prices being artificially cheap because of the losses piling up, that she provides a solid opportunity to bet on in the coming days.

Anna Bondar Recent Form

I’ve been a big fan of Bondar’s for quite a few years now, but as time has passed, so too has my belief that she’ll realise her potential.

Though I like her serve and forehand combination, the latter is far too erratic to be relied upon and she tends to hit her way out of matches. She almost did just that against this very opponent in Mexico a week ago, before playing a terrible match against Francesca Jones that nearly saw her pull off another Houdini act by forcing a third set, before the forehand let her down again and saw her ushered away with ease in the deciding set.

Other than an ITF tournament win in Portugal in February, Bondar has really struggled for success for a long time now. I’m not sure that a venue that penalises erratic play as much as any other on tour is the place for her to try and turn that around.

Tatjana Maria vs Anna Bondar H2H – Stat of the Match

The series between these two is now 2-1 to Bondar, with the Hungarian winning each of the last two meetings. As I mentioned though, last week’s tilt was as close as they come and had Maria dominating the early stages.

I’m not sure that playing in even more altitude does anything but move this more into Maria’s column.
