Sorana Cirstea is one of four players who gained entry into the main draw of the Miami Open under protecting ranking status, and the Romanian native will face Elisabetta Cocciaretto in the opening round on Tuesday at Miami Gardens.

Defending champion Danielle Collins is on deck for the winner of this first-round battle in Section 1 of the top half of the bracket.

Cirstea is heavily favored at -250 to advance to the second round of this WTA1000 event in the Sunshine State.

EJ Garr’s prediction for Sorana Cirstea vs. Elisabetta Cocciaretto features odds at -116, which can be found below.

Sorana Cirstea vs Elisabetta Cocciaretto WTA Miami Open Prediction: Romanian Favored to Advance

  • Prediction: Sorana Cirstea -3.5 Games
  • Best Odds: -116
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as of 7:00 am UK Time on March 18, 2025. Odds may now differ.

Sorana Cirstea used her protected ranking entry into the main draw of the Miami Open, and the line setters have placed the Romanian at -250 odds to face Danielle Collins in the second round.

That line won’t shock anyone, and luckily, we have a decent price on the -3.5 games despite the heavy chalk on Cirstea to advance.

The -4 has even-money odds at +100 for Cristea to cover the handicap, and the +110 at Bet365 for Cirstea to sweep the Italian is fairly valued.

I don’t expect Cocciaretto to steal a set from Cirstea, and this has been a dismal campaign to start 2025 for the Italian native. Wins over Irina Begu and Ana Bogdan are all the Italians can claim this year, and every other outing has ended in defeat.

Cocciaretto got credited with the win over Zarazua at Indian Wells, but the match didn’t even finish after the Mexican native retired. Whilst Cocciaretto is ranked 82nd to Cirstea’s 101st, notice which player has -250 odds to advance.

Cirstea is 6 – 3 over the last nine outings, and the three losses are still against quality opponents where she can gain knowledge and experience. Losses to McCartney Kessler, Emma Navarro, and Karolina Muchova aren’t embarrassing to anyone on the WTA Tour.

Cirstea shouldn’t struggle with Cocciaretto unless she plays down to her opponent, and I don’t expect that to be the case. Either play the 2 – 0 Correct Sets prop at +110 or pay the marginal juice for the -3.5 cover of the spread and advance to the next round.

SORANA CIRSTEA RECENT FORM

Sorana Cirstea started the season with a 1 – 4 record and has leveled it to 7 – 7 with 6 wins in the last 9 outings.

The former World’s #26 has been riddled with injuries over the last two years and had only competed in 28 matches in 2024.

The Romanian native started to pick up the pieces in Dubai with wins against Kasatkina and Navarro, and she followed it up with a pair of wins in Austin before falling to Muchova.

Despite the current losses to Kessler and losing the rematch with Navarro, Cirstea went out fighting and pushed both matters to three sets before defeat.

ELISABETTA COCCIARETTO RECENT FORM

Elisabetta Cocciaretto closed the 2024 campaign with three straight losses and opened the 2025 campaign with defeats at Hobart, the Australian Open, and Linz.

After two wins at Cluj against Begu and Bogdan, the Italian native has lost three of the last four outings and was only credited with a win against Zarazua because the Mexican native couldn’t finish the match.

Cocciaretto is 3 – 6 in 2025 and has fallen 30 spots in the WTA Rankings since reaching 52nd last year (82nd).

CIRSTEA VS COCCIARETTO HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Sorana Cirstea was the victor in the only meeting against Cocciaretto in Dubai during the 2020 campaign.
