Sorana Cirstea entered the main draw of the Miami Open with her protecting ranking status and the Romanian native picked up a win in the opening round to face defending champion Danielle Collins in the second round.

Collins opens the event as a -175 favorite to begin defending her title from last year’s Miami Open tournament win. The American, however, is not in the best form coming into this WTA1000 event and the field is full of players that will make it difficult to pick up another title at Miami Gardens.

EJ Garr’s prediction for Sorana Cirstea vs. Danielle Collins features odds at +143, which can be found below.

Sorana Cirstea vs Danielle Collins WTA Miami Open Prediction: We’re Going The Distance

  • Prediction: Match Total Over 2.5 Sets
  • Best Odds: +143
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as of 7:00 am UK Time on March 20, 2025. Odds may now differ.

Sorana Cirstea did enough in the first round to help us cash the -3.5 spread winning by four games against Elisabetta Cocciaretto, and today, the Romanian is the underdog in the second round against the defending champ.

Cirstea and Collins locked horns last year in Miami in the fourth round in Section 4 of the top half of the bracket, and Collins dismantled the Romanian in straight sets.

Collins was in her best form around this time last season, but the end of the 2024 campaign was a complete disaster for the American, and it has carried over into 2025.

Since the Olympic Games, Collins has simply been a different player, and not in a good way. When she retired against Iga Swiatek in Paris, nothing has gone right since then, and the American ended 2024 losing her last 5 outings.

To kick off the 2025 campaign, Collins got swept against Ons Jabeur in Adelaide and looked less than impressive at the Australian Open.  Wins against Daria Snigur and Destanee Aiava were all the American native could muster up in the first Major Tournament of the campaign, and a win over Hailey Baptiste at Indian Wells isn’t anything to write home about.

Collins was a +155 underdog against Elina Svitolina in the second round at Indian Wells and got swept off the court by the Ukrainian.

With Collins in dire need of confidence, I can foresee her dropping a set to Cirstea and forcing the American to a third frame. What happens from there isn’t our concern as long as they get there, so the Over 2.5 sets prop is the play at +143.

SORANA CIRSTEA RECENT FORM

Sorana Cirstea started the week ranked outside the top 100 (101), and the 34-year-old veteran is coming off a poor 2024 campaign.

Cirstea produced a 12 – 16 record in only 28 appearances last season and lost all three outings during the grass swing.

The Romanian native is 8 – 7 this year but is 7 – 3 over the last 10 games.

DANIELLE COLLINS RECENT FORM

Danielle Collins has only competed in three events this season and has a 3 – 3 record entering her first match at the Miami Open.

Collins climbed as high as 11th in the WTA Rankings last season after putting together her best season with a 42 – 17 record, including tournament wins at Charleson and Miami.

CIRSTEA VS COLLINS HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Danielle Collins is 2 – 0 against Sorana Cirstea. They first met during the 2018 campaign in Rome, and Collins escaped with a three-set win. As I mentioned, their most recent appearance was here in Miami last year in the fourth round, and Collins swept the Romanian out of the event.

The winner of this match will face Rebeka Masarova or Donna Vekic in the third round of the Miami Open.
