The second preview of the day comes from the WTA’s Open Capfinances Rouen Metropole. It’s Yue Yuan vs Mayar Sherif in a clay court battle. Our Yuan vs Sherif prediction is for Sherif to win.

Sherif’s win probability comes in at 46.7% while Yuan is favored to win at 1.71 odds. The handicap is one game and the total game line is 21.5.

Yuan vs Sherif Prediction: Surface Edge Too Large to Pass on Sherif as the Underdog

  • Prediction: Sherif to win
  • Best Odds: 2.14
  • Bookmaker: Unibet
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as at 2:00 am UK Time on April 16th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

Sherif hasn’t played much on tour this year. Her lone wins in 2024 have come in Billie Jean King Cup and African Games action.

She was 7-2 in those competitions, but it was all against much lower-level opposition. Yuan is a sterner test, but she’s also a power-oriented player who can be error-prone and has never really shown a propensity for success away from hard courts.

Sherif, on the other hand, is a clay court specialist. Her grip is specifically geared towards creating the most topspin that it can and that can be a detriment on other surfaces, but has served her well over the years on the dirt.

She’s also a player who has had a lot of success at the lower levels of the WTA Tour. She’s racked up wins at the 125k tournaments, and while a 250 is a step up, it still has entry limitations, which make the fields more manageable.

Our expert insights page has more previews from the many tournaments on offer this week.

Yue Yuan Recent Form

It’s been a breakout season for Yuan, who has reached a semifinal as a qualifier (Hobart), won a title (Austin), and backed that title up with a run to the second week in Indian Wells.

She plays a brand of first-strike tennis that works well on hard courts and quicker surfaces but isn’t the most effective style on clay courts, where more margin for error and topspin-heavy play are rewarded.

Last season Yuan managed to go 8-7 on clay, but all of her matches were played at the ITF level, 125k level, or in French Open qualifying. A trio of her eight wins also came on the quicker green Har Tru clay.

Perhaps her improvements this season translate to her least effective surface as well, but I’ll need to see that first and can’t make her a favorite against a natural clay courter.

Mayar Sherif Recent Form

As mentioned above, Sherif is still searching for her first win this season on the pro circuit. Mind you, she’s only played one match on clay and that was on the quicker green stuff in Charleston, where she lost to a player with a play style based on consistency and making as many balls as possible. Even that came in three sets.

I’m not sure why she’s chosen to schedule the way she has so far in 2024, but now that the clay season has rolled around, she’s slated to play this week, as well as the big 1000 tournament in Madrid next week and a 125k in Lleida should she be eliminated early in the Spanish capital.

This is the time of year she should be looking to amass as many points as she can and a run in Rouen would serve her well.

Yue Yuan vs Mayar Sherif H2H – Stat of the Match

These two met once last year at a clay 125k event, with Sherif winning in straight sets and by a four-game margin.

I think the market has taken a look at the form of each of these women so far in 2024 and made Yuan the favorite, despite her limitations on clay and her previous loss to Sherif. Now, to be fair to her, she has been on fire this year, so it’s plausible she carries that momentum forward, but even indoors, I have clay courts benefiting Sherif far more than Yuan and evening the playing field.
