If we’re being honest, I have no earthly idea who is going to win this matchup. Two massive servers and pretty poor returners on some of the faster courts in tennis.
Shelton may be the higher-ranked player and much flashier with his game, but I’m not sure he’s going to get a chance to really use his superior speed and movement in a match that he’s going to have a devilish time starting points in.
The American has continually played lesser opposition close, which is all I ask for when backing an underdog against players like him. There’s no doubt he’s far more talented, but like many others on the ATP circuit, his lack of tactical play and patience on return makes it far too easy for the opposition to stick around in matches.
The market is also telling us to expect either three sets or a pair of tiebreaks (essentially coin flips, with one player potentially slightly more likely to win them) with the total set at 26 and the first set over the market saying a tiebreak is likely in the 50-55% range. Our Shelton vs Meptshi Perricard prediction is for Mpetshi Perricard to win.

Ben Shelton Recent Form
Last season was Shelton’s first on the grass, and though he has a huge lefty serve and massive power from the baseline, the now 21-year-old still struggled, going 2-3 with losses to clay courters Lorenzo Musetti and Laslo Djere.
This year hasn’t started much better, with James Duckworth defeating him in three sets in the opening week of action on the grass in Stuttgart.
Whether it’s the speed of the courts making his already suspect return game even less effective, or the lack of comfort with the exaggerated low bounce and awkward movement on a tricky surface, he still hasn’t seemed to figure things out.
It won’t get any easier taking on one of the better serves from the Challenger Tour in Mpetshi Perricard, who will be able to find plenty of cheap points and make life even more miserable on return.
Giovani Mpetshi Perricard Recent Form
The Frenchman is also a novice on the lawn courts, but his introduction has been a bit smoother, thanks in large part to the monster first serve he has.
It’s also unsurprising that of the 13 sets he’s played this year on the grass, almost half of them have gone to tiebreaks, with another ending 7-5. His hold plus break percentage for the last 52 weeks on the surface? 106.1%. The reason? A hold rate of nearly 96%. If he finds a break against you in any given set, that set is as good as done.
Now, breaks are going to be few and far between in this one in all likelihood, but I have no problem taking my chances in tiebreaks with an underdog at these kinds of odds.
