Shapovalov vs Griekspoor Prediction: Back Canadian Lefty in Bid for Another Run in Geneva

  • Prediction: Shapovalov to win
  • Best Odds: 1.91
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds as at 1:30 am UK Time on May 22nd, 2024. Odds may now differ.

I rarely bet on Shapovalov to win matches, but in this instance, I think the prices warrant it. There isn’t much I think Griekspoor does better than the Canadian, and we’re seeing odds that would imply this is a very close match.

I like that Shapovalov can match the Dutchman’s power, is more athletic, and even though he’s not the most adept player on return, he’s still the much better returner in this matchup.

There aren’t many reasons – if any – to believe Griekspoor deserves to be seen as a near coin flip chance in this contest. Our Shapovalov vs Griekspoor prediction is for Shapovalov to win.

We have a preview for the French Open qualifying up over on the expert insights page.

Denis Shapovalov Recent Form

Slowly but surely, the Canadian is starting to find some form on the clay after beginning with a pair of really poor matches against Marcos Giron and Corentin Moutet.

Since then, we’ve seen him defeat strong clay courters Tomas Martin Etcheverry, Facundo Diaz Acosta, and now Federico Coria in the first round here. Sure, the first two wins came in altitude in Madrid, but Geneva is played in similar conditions and appears to favor the Canadian.

His losses? To a top-5 Alexander Zverev and one of the ascending clay youngsters in Luciano Darderi (and that was in a third set tiebreak).

We’ve always known that Shapovalov has all the tools and can play across surfaces, but he hasn’t had a lot of success realizing his potential in recent years. The tides may be turning now though and I think he’d be disappointed if he lost to Griekspoor after finally picking up some decent wins against stronger clay courters than his Dutch counterpart.

Tallon Griekspoor Recent Form

It’s been a pretty poor 2024 for the 27-year-old, who is still somehow ranked inside the world’s top 30. He did well to reach the semifinals in Rotterdam, but that was back in February and on indoor hard courts.

The clay season hasn’t been nearly as kind to him, with lopsided losses and a slew of wins against hard courters and an out-of-form Holger Rune who has given him a run for worst returners on tour.

That brings me to the point of Griekspoor being fairly useless on return this season. Only Chris Eubanks (his opponent in the opening round) has broken at a worse rate among the world’s top 50 players.

With Shapovalov having a strong lefty serve and plenty of power from the baseline, along with the altitude quickening the conditions in Geneva, it feels as though Griekspoor will need an incredible serving day to keep this one close.

Shapovalov vs Griekspoor H2H – Stat of the Match

I’m quite surprised that these two have never played on the professional circuit. This is an interesting venue for their first career matchup. I’m anxious to see if Shapovalov can capitalize on his crosscourt forehand going into the weaker Griekspoor backhand or not. That is the one knock on Shapovalov – that his tactical play isn’t quite up to par.
