It’s the final day of qualifying at the U.S. Open in New York City! Let’s go over Diego Schwartzman vs Vilius Gaubas in an old school versus new school matchup.

Gaubas’ win probability is only 42%, while Schwartzman is favoured to win at 1.53 odds. The handicap is 1.5 games and the total games line is 22.5.

Jon Reid’s Schwartzman vs Gaubas prediction is for Gaubas to win.

Diego Schwartzman vs Vilius Gaubas Prediction: Young Gun to Take Down Another Veteran

  • Prediction: Gaubas to win
  • Best Odds: 2.38
  • Bookmaker: bet365
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at at 1:45 am UK Time on August 22nd, 2024.

After beating Richard Gasquet one day, Gaubas has the chance to beat another grizzled veteran on Thursday when he squares off with Schwartzman.

As much as I’d like to see Schwartzman earn his way into the main draw at his final major tournament, I simply can’t get past the fact that his underpowered and more erratic game these days shouldn’t be a favourite against someone like Gaubas.

Though the Lithuanian has been playing more on clay, he has the weapons necessary to dictate play and beat Schwartzman, and without much power coming from the other side of the net, I don’t envision him being rushed all that much from the baseline.

I’ll take the upstart player with the bigger game and better form at underdog odds to move into the main draw of 128.

Diego Schwartzman Recent Form

The times have caught up to the diminutive 32-year-old, who has already announced that this will be his last year on tour as more and more players pass him by.

This could very well be his last grand slam match, as he contends with an in-form up-and-comer in Gaubas.

He reached this position by beating a pair of volatile clay courters in Andrea Pellegrino and Thiago Tirante, though he had to play several close sets to do it. He’s won all four he’s played, but hasn’t been all that convincing.

Now tasked with another player with pop from the baseline who prefers clay, we’ll see if he can keep winning these sets by fine margins. Gaubas has been in form of late and has more control over his groundstrokes than each of the last two guys Schwartzman sent packing. That’s key, because all Schwartzman has left to his game is the ability to play solid tennis from the baseline and wait out mistakes from the player on the other side.

Vilius Gaubas Recent Form

It’s been an excellent campaign for the teenager, who has propelled himself into the world’s top-200, and with a win on Thursday, he’ll set a new career high in that department.

As for his recent performances? How about a run to the final of the Verona Challenger and then a title in Cordenons at another Italian Challenger tournament? In between the two he did lose to Kyrian Jacquet in the opening round in San Marino, but it’s easy to excuse when he’s playing well outside of that and because Jacquet is a quality player at that level and that makes for a tough opening round draw.

Now in New York, Gaubas has also won all four sets he’s played, but he’s done so in more convincing fashion and given the surface, he’s done so against a higher calibre of player.

He has the weapons, the form (and I’d guess, as result, the confidence) and he’s catching his opponent at the right time in his career. If there was ever a time for Gaubas to make his main draw debut in a best-of-five tournament, this is it.

Diego Schwartzman vs Vilius Gaubas H2H – Stat of the Match

This is the first meeting between the two. They obviously come from different generations and with Gaubas just getting acquainted with the pro circuit, he’s never had the chance to cross paths with the Argentine.
