With the final round of qualifying at the ATP’s BNP Paribas Open once more being slow to release odds, we’ll look to the Challenger Tour once more for our selections on Tuesday.
Pennaforti’s win probability is only 37%, with Schwaerzler favoured to win at 1.48 odds. The handicap is three games and the total games line is 22.
Jon Reid’s Schwaerzler vs Pennaforti prediction is for Schwaerzler to win in comfortable fashion.

I know returning at altitude in Kigali is not easy and I’m also aware that as the match progressed a week ago, the young lefty struggled against Maxmilian Neuchrist and faded away in the third set.
That said, this seems like a tremendous opportunity to back one of the better clay court prospects in the world against someone that I think has a few nice characteristics to his game but is lacking in quality relatively speaking.
I think some of the early results this year were disappointing, but we’ll go over his form below, and I think that’s improved as he’s gotten his feet under him as well.
Ultimately, this comes down to numbers and I make this a four-game handicap, with a -3 showing significant value. The fact that Pennaforti is coming off a nearly-three hour qualifying match also makes me believe if this does go to a third, Schwaerzler is actually the player best poised to take advantage this time around.
Favourite handicaps can be tough to cash in three sets on occasion, but if Pennaforti begins feeling it in his legs, we have a decent probability of a lopsided set in our favour as well.

J.J. Schwaerzler Recent Form
There’s no way to describe the 19-year-old’s start to the season other than shaky. Now, he opted for a South American start so he could get his season underway on his preferred red clay courts.
As a teenager so far from home on a different continent, some speed bumps are to be expected. Since some mediocre play in Buenos Aires and Punta del Este, however, Schwaerzler has looked much more like the prospect that people have been talking about the last year or two.
A pair of wins against solid baseliners and tough outs on the dirt got him into the main draw in Rosario, before he was eliminated by one of the best players in the draw, Federico Coria, after having had the early lead.
No shame in that last result and he then took a few weeks off before this block of tournaments in Central Africa.
His game consists of decent pace, but an incredible amount of spin that really makes his ball hard to attack and can really push his opposition back behind the baseline. Now, his consistency on the forehand side certainly needs more refining, but one can see why the expectations are there when it comes to playing on the slower, higher-bouncing surface.
Taking on an opponent that doesn’t have the quality, plays a tour below him and coming off a three-hour match, I’d think he’d be disappointed if he couldn’t win this one in relatively short order.
Gabriele Pennaforti Recent Form
I think the lack of experience at this level of the professional circuit speaks volumes regarding Pennaforti. This isn’t an 18-year-old prospect trying to polish his game and build his ranking down on the ITF Tour. Now 24 years old, the Italian has a decent, albeit far from inspiring game.
The serve can find him a cheap point here or there and if the ball is left short, he can dictate play with his forehand, but any kind of depth forces him to cede control of the point and while I admire his willingness and even desire to approach the net, it’s not the most effective tactic when it comes to clay court tennis.
There’s certainly an element of the altitude quickening the conditions in the Rwandan at capital at play in this handicap, but I’m not sure it really should be playing that much of a role in determining what the proper handicap should be seeing as Pennaforti isn’t really equipped to take advantage.
J.J. Schwaerzler vs Gabriele Pennaforti H2H – Stat of the Match
With Schwaerzler still being so young and already making the jump to playing primarily Challenger Tour events, there haven’t been many opportunities for these two to play one another, resulting in this being the first meeting between the pair.
