Jasmine Paolini started the week ranked 4th on the WTA Tour and is following up quite a 2024 campaign. After the WTA Finals with only one win at the big year-end event, Paolini didn’t look ready to start the 2025 campaign after the two losses at the WTL.

The Italian native recovered at the United Cup going 2 – 1 and looked extremely prepared for the Australian Open this week.

Paolini blanked Sijia Wei in the opening set of the first round at six to love but the Italian didn’t keep the mean streak going. A 6 – 4 second set wasn’t quite as convincing as the opening frame but I am counting on a similar result today.

With the first-set total staring at me with +131 odds, I have to reach out and kiss it!

We cashed the Townsend vs Zarazua +150 yesterday after that affair went the distance but I don’t see it coming close to that today.

Paolini is listed at -700 to win this match and the line setters see this as a decisive win for the World’s #4. 

I cannot envision Zarazua breaking Paolini and I expect Jasmine to be able to smack a few aces around en route to the third round.

The +131 bet is on the expectation of a 6 – 2 opening frame for the Italian is more my style because you know I am the Mayor of Value City! 

RENATA ZARAZUA RECENT FORM

Renata Zarazua is 4 – 3 this year and hasn’t won back-to-back outings alternating wins and losses to start the season. 

Zarazua was given the Lucky Loser spot at Hobart but she wasn’t so lucky going 2 – 2 at the event.

Service issues against Mertens reared their ugly head for Zarazua, which is quite the opposite of what we saw yesterday against Townsend. Townsend was all over the place committing 53 unforced errors with 10 double faults making it easy for the Mexican native to advance to the second round.

JASMINE PAOLINI RECENT FORM

Jasmine Paolini is 3 – 1 in 2025 and following up a 42 – 21 2024 campaign. The Italian #4 has new objectives in 2025 now that she is the hunted and not the one doing the hunting if you get my drift. 

When a player is listed at -700 to beat anyone in a Major Tournament, it boosts the pressure to win. Winning is enough for Paolini and we all know she won’t try to embarrass anyone on a tennis court.

We had proof of that in the first round after taking it easy on Wei after the obnoxious sweep, 6 – 0.

PAOLINI VS ZARAZUA HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

This second-round match at the Australian Open will be the first meeting between Paolini and Zarazua.

The winner of this affair will play Elina Svitolina or Caroline Dolehide in the third round.
