Our first preview for Wednesday comes from the ATP Challenger Tour. With only one match on offer at the French Open, we’ll look for a bonus bet from the lower professional circuit to go with our quarterfinal preview. Our Albot vs Paulson prediction is available below.

Let’s head to the Unicredit Czech Open to preview Radu Albot vs Andrew Paulson.

Paulson’s win probability is about 38%, with Albot favored to win at 1.50 odds. The handicap is 3.5 games and the total games line is 21.5.

Albot vs Paulson Prediction: Tour-Level Veteran Too Solid for Paulson

  • Prediction: Albot -3 Games & Albot -3.5 Games
  • Best Odds: 1.84 & 1.97
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10 & 3/10

Odds as at 1:00 am UK Time on June 5th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

Haven’t seen Paulson playing in quite some time. Still only 22 years old, he was one of many promising teenage Czech players a few years ago. Now, I don’t think he ever had the upside of guys like Tomas Machac and Jiri Lehecka, but I will say I think his lack of progression has been a bit disappointing.

Armed with a huge first serve, there was always the potential for his lowest level to be fairly high, simply because he could find so many cheap points. That said, the baseline game is incredibly erratic and he lacks any kind of dynamism.

Albot has always been a hard courter by trade, but in recent years, he’s dropped down to the Challenger Tour for some clay court matches and it’s worked decently. He’s adequate on return and incredibly solid from the baseline.

Even on a surface he’s less fond of, he’s managed to go 16-9 this year across the Challenger circuit and main tour qualifying and main draws. The average level of opponent that’s beaten him is much higher than Paulson and the younger of the two players being erratic plays well for his rigid solidity.

It doesn’t seem there was an injury in his match on Tuesday, and though he had to come from behind, he did so against a former top-50 player and someone who even when struggling is a far tougher clay-court opponent than the one he plays next.

Finally, Paulson had a three-setter of his own, against a quick courter from Russia and I trust him far less to recover in time for Wednesday’s match than I trust Albot to do the same. I’m going to split my stake here to create a -3.25 asian handicap-type bet. Our Albot vs Paulson prediction is for Albot to cover the game handicaps.

Our expert insights page has a French Open preview for the lone men’s match of the day. Head on over and check it out!

Radu Albot Recent Form

As I mentioned above, Albot may not be the most adept clay court tennis player, but he’s improved in the last few seasons, and at the very least, he’s been competitive at this level and in some lower-level main tour tournaments.

Even his losses have come to several tour-level pros in Thiago Monteiro, Pedro Martinez, and Alexandre Muller or one of the game’s top prospects like Joao Fonseca. All in all, you’d be hard-pressed to make a case that any of his nine losses came against players comparable to Paulson.

His game always had potential with his ability to track down shots, extend rallies, and avoid unforced errors, but the bounces and lack of attack always troubled him. We’ve seen him start to become more accustomed to play on the surface since the 2023 season though, and I don’t know if the market has caught up in this spot against someone of a much lower level.

Andrew Paulson Recent Form

The 22-year-old has only played four matches so far this season, beating aging veterans Jiri Vesely and Mirza Basic and then the hard court specialist Alibek Kachmazov in the first round on Tuesday (in three sets).

Last year the current world No. 318 did manage to put together a 31-13 record, though 24 of those came at the ITF level. On the Challenger circuit? That record was just 8-9, with a solid number of those coming in qualifiers.

Sure, he may be able to serve his way through this one, but the level he’s shown, the lack of play this season, the difference in pedigree, and the matchup advantage for Albot all point to a relatively straightforward loss for the home country hope.

Not surprising that these two haven’t crossed paths yet with them often playing two entire tours apart.
