Are you ready for it? An epic clash is about to transpire when Zheng and Anisimova take the court on Monday to kick off the main draw of the US Open.
Let’s take you down memory lane to start the week, shall we? It’s 2017 and Coco Gauff is favored to win the US Open Girls’ title but someone forgot to tell that to Amanda Anisimova. Amanda beat the tar out of Coco to the tune of 12 – 2 and the beginning of two American careers was unfolding in front of our eyes. We all know that Coco is putting together her career but Amanda has dealt with some absences from the tour from trying to deal with the constant pressure of performing week after week at a high level. Amanda was ranked 24th in 2019, a far cry from the 369th at the beginning of this season.
While Amanda gets her head and game together, taking on the Gold Medal winner and the 7th-ranked player on the WTA Tour is quite a rough main draw opener for anyone.
The concern I have with Zheng stems from the loss to Pavyluchenkova in Cincinnati. Zheng has only played in two matches since the Olympics; all she can claim is a win over Magda Frech. I am sorry, but Anisimova will test Zheng much more than Frech ever could and we will see a 3-set battle to open play at the 2024 US Open.
QINWEN ZHENG RECENT FORM
Since Qinwen Zheng won her Gold Medal in Paris, the Chinese native couldn’t even get out of the second round in Cincinnati after bowing out of DC and Toronto.
Zheng was terrific in clay this season accumulating a 17 – 4 record and the 13 – 7 record on hardcourts leaves some room for improvement. Qinwen reached the quarterfinals of the US Open a year ago, and she reeled off 12 straight wins before the loss to Pavlyuchenkova at Cincy.
AMANDA ANISIMOVA RECENT FORM
Amanda was ranked 132nd on the WTA tour less than a month ago and now the American can be found inside the top 50. Sneaking under the number at 49th, Anisimova is 13 – 4 on hardcourts this campaign and has a great memory of hoisting the 2017 Girls’ trophy in New York before turning pro.
Amanda came within a set of winning her first tournament this season just days ago, but the loss to Jess Pegula in the final in Toronto is still the type of form that a player wants leading into a Major.
ZHENG VS ANISIMOVA H2H – STAT OF THE MATCH
This will be the first meeting between Zheng and Anisimova on any surface.
