The year’s final major is here and we’ve got plenty of U.S. Open content coming your way in the next few weeks. For our first men’s writeup of the event, let’s take a deeper look at Pedro Martinez vs Maks Kasnikowski.

Kasnikowski’s win probability is 50%, with Martinez favoured to win at 1.91 odds. The handicap is 0.5 games and the total games line is 38.

Jon Reid’s Martinez vs Kasnikowski prediction is for Kasnikowski.

I think this is a pretty decent draw for the 21-year-old in his best-of-five tennis debut. The U.S. Open is the first main draw of a major for Kasnikowski and though that could be tough for someone who hasn’t played this elongated format before, he’s playing someone that shouldn’t be able to blast through him on a surface he prefers and the fact that he has the rally tolerance to stick in the longer rallies with Martinez is probably a plus.

The one concern here is the physicality edge I’d expect the Spaniard to have, but when betting prices like this, it’s rare to find a matchup where everything is in the underdog’s favour.

Read on for more expert insights.

Pedro Martinez Recent Form

Outside of reaching the semis at the Hamburg Open about a month ago, it’s been a summer to forget for the 27-year-old. He’s lost in one of his first two matches in his other eight professional tour events and nine if you count the Olympics, dating back to late May in Lyon.

Martinez has a grinding style that looks to wear opponents down, but he still lacks much offence and leaves too many balls short for someone that looks to defend as much as he does.

I’m also weary about the effectiveness of his forehand off of clay courts, where the spin doesn’t work nearly as effectively. His movement, court coverage and ability to extend points are strong, but is that enough to get him through one of the players that has really surprised at the Challenger level this season?

Maks Kasnikowski Recent Form

Having started the 2024 season ranked No. 324, there’s no doubt that Kasnikowski has taken a few big steps forward in his development. How far he can go all depends on how much more firepower he can work into his arsenal, but there’s no doubt in my mind that he’s one of the top-200 players in the world at the moment.

With a solid game that has a decent first serve and forehand, the Pole has managed to win an ITF title, as well as two Challenger trophies this year. He’s won them on clay, as well as hard courts – both indoors and outdoors – to boot.

Has he stumbled a bit in early rounds at events as well? Sure. I dare say that’s part of jumping up to higher levels in the sport. It’s hard to win trophies and make deep runs every week.

The consistency in his game and his ability to translate his game to hard courts is enough for me to believe that even without much experience against main tour competition, he should be a slight favourite against someone like Martinez when the match is played on this surface.

No prior meetings between these two. Not a surprise with how new Kasnikowski is to the Challenger Tour and how little he’s played on the main circuit.
