Pedro Cachin vs Laslo Djere (Generali Open): Thursday, August 3rd

Dominant stuff from Tallon Griekspoor, who was criminally undervalued in that matchup with Liam Broady. Not only did he win by six games, but he went the entirety of the match without facing a break point and generated a steady stream of his own when on return.

For Thursday’s ATP preview, we’ll head back to the Generali Open in Kitzbuhel, where they’re playing some altitude clay-court tennis and break down the Pedro Cachin vs Laslo Djere match.

Pedro Cachin vs Laslo Djere Expert Tip

I’ve been big on Djere’s chances in the betting markets the last few weeks and I’m not going to stop here.

His improved game and added aggression play well in the thinner air and the fact he has more pedigree at the top level of the game than his Argentine opponent makes me think he should be a favourite here rather than even money to win the contest.

It’s clear the market is putting a lot of stock into the Gstaad title (also played at altitude) for Cachin and I think it’s gone a bit too far.

Read on for more expert insights.

  • Expert Tip: Djere to win at 2.00 with Pinnacle, using 2/10 stakes.

Pedro Cachin Recent Form

It’s been a two-year stretch to remember for Cachin, who used a slew of wins at the Challenger Tour level a year ago to earn his way into many more World Tour level tournaments in 2023.

The early stages of the season appeared to be a relatively steep learning curve for the 28-year-old.

In the last few months though, Cachin has made the final of a Challenger in Madrid, the fourth round of the Madrid Masters event and won the 250 in Gstaad a few weeks ago.

He’s actually seen his ranking vault to 54th in the world, and his win over Albert Ramos Vinolas in the second round may well earn him a new career-high ranking (a win against Djere would assure it).

His improvement on serve is likely the biggest reason for the strides he’s taken in 2023, though his more aggressive mindset – particularly on the forehand – should also receive some credit.

Whether he’s ready to make another jump into the top-30 is another story.

Laslo Djere Recent Form

Don’t sleep on the Serbian here either. Djere has long been a well-known tour pro on clay courts.

He too has managed to add a bit more offence to his game when it comes to his serve and mentality and approach on the forehand. It’s allowed him to generate far more cheap points behind his serve, while still playing an effective game on return.

It’s also allowed him to find more success on hard courts and grass courts in recent years than we’d seen in the past.

As for his recent results? He’s coming off an impressive run of his own, reaching the final of the 500-level event in Hamburg, Germany, losing only to Alexander Zverev.

With both putting up pretty impressive results of late, I’m more apt to trust the more experienced player with more tour-level pedigree.

The only concern here for me is the potential fatigue setting in after a long week in Hamburg and then a pair of matches already under his belt in Kitzbuhel. I think the altitude helps alleviate some of those concerns, however, seeing as the points are a bit shorter than a typical clay-court match.

Pedro Cachin vs Laslo Djere H2H – Stat of the Match

The only time these two have played each other prior to this encounter came eight years ago in Gstaad, which Cachin won from a set down. Needless to say, there is very little to take from a contest that took place nearly a decade ago.

In terms of a stats outlook in this one, I have to look to the service numbers on clay this season for each.

Not only are Djere’s slightly more impressive, but he’s played fewer matches at the Challenger level, meaning the competition has been a bit more impressive.

For me, it’s simply a case of the wrong man being favoured in this one.
