We have an upset brewing in the Parisian Capital, as Yulia Putintseva lands the underdog role against Paula Badosa on Thursday at Stade Roland Garros.

I will just cut to the chase and tell you the Kazhakstanian faithful will celebrate a victory on Thursday after Putintseva gets past Badosa. 

This is the fourth time these ladies have faced each other, and Badosa has a 2 – 1 edge as they meet for the first time on clay. Yulia won their most recent battle in 2022, but history isn’t going to decide the winner of this match.

Putintseva is placed at 39th in the WTA World Rankings, and at 29 years old she is showing no signs of slowing down. Yulia has three clay titles in her career, and her record on clay since 2013 is outstanding.

Paula Badosa’s back issues have kept her off the court as she competes in only her 21st match of the 2024 campaign today. At 10 – 10 with a 5 – 4 record on clay, Paula reached as high as 8th in 2020, and I remember calling her Bad Ass Badosa because she was playing her best tennis back then.

Badosa needed to make up a first-set defeat to Katie Boulter in her first-round affair at Roland Garros from section 8 in the bottom bracket. Boulter is ranked 28th on tour, so that was a quality win to help build any momentum in the second Major event of 2024. 

I am calling for Putintseva to advance from this match at +125, so let’s hope Mother Nature doesn’t affect the schedule again on Thursday.

Badosa has only managed to put together two win streaks of 3 or more games over the last year, both of which came in Rome in 2023 and 2024. 

Limited to only 27 matches last season due to her back issues, she has only made it through 20 games in 2024 with a 10 – 10 record. 

YULIA PUTINTSEVA RECENT FORM

Putintseva has a 9 – 3 record on clay this season to bring her overall count to 23 wins and 14 losses in 2024. 

Last year’s appearance in the third round at the French Open marked her best finish since 2017, and only two times has she advanced to that stage of this Major.
