Wildcard entrant Naomi Osaka will square off with Karolina Muchova in the second round of the US Open on Thursday in New York and the Japanese native will carry the chalk into the match.

At -150, Osaka has the experience of two US Open title runs under her belt although she hasn’t gotten out of the third round since her second title run in 2020. Karolina Muchova has dropped out of the top 50 in the WTA rankings entering New York limiting the Czech native to only 12 appearances in 2024.

EJ Garr’s Naomi Osaka vs Karolina Muchova prediction features odds at +142 in the expectation of a 3-set second-round thriller at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Naomi Osaka vs Karolina Muchova Prediction: A Classic Second-Round Battle in NY

  • Prediction: Match Total Over 2.5 Sets
  • Best Odds: +142
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds updated at 7:00 am UK Time on August 29, 2024.

I envision a match that goes the distance as you can see from my prediction on the Over 2.5 Sets with a +142 offer on the table. It’s a hunch, and it’s because no one knows what we’ll get from Osaka and Muchova has barely seen the court this season.

Muchova has only competed in four tournaments this season along with the appearance at the Olympics and this week’s showing at the US Open. The World’s former #8 wasn’t seen in an event this year until the grass swing at Eastbourne where she withdrew before the quarterfinal outing with Madison Keys. The right wrist injury only took two matches to end her first tourney entry and then she tanked at Wimbledon as her ranking continued to descend to what is now  52nd on the WTA Tour.

With Naomi listed at -150, that is an inflated line for the action toward the Japanese 2-Time US Open Champion who isn’t playing her best tennis entering New York. Osaka is 4 – 6 in her last 10 outings but the first-round win over Ostapenko should inspire Naomi to do her best to stay in this event.

Osaka will not be able to prevent Muchova from taking a set as long as the Czech native plays without fear that the wrist will give out again. Muchova looked relatively comfortable against Katie Volynets in the first round, and she needs to play with that confidence today.

We’re going the distance so buckle up for a good one!

NAOMI OSAKA RECENT FORM

Naomi Osaka hasn’t picked up more than one win in any event since June at Hertogenbosch which amounted to two wins when the grass swing started.

Osaka was bounced out of Toronto by Elise Mertens and Ashlyn Krueger upset Osaka in Cincinnati ao what does being favored do for Osaka?

Naomi is 10 – 8 on hardcourts this season with a 19 – 16 record and her ranking has descended to 88th entering the last Major Tournament of 2024.

KAROLINA MUCHOVA RECENT FORM

Karolina has only played in 12 total matches this campaign although she will still be able to have a positive record on all three surfaces this campaign.

Muchova has an 8 – 4 record with three hardcourt appearances that have resulted in two wins and a loss.

Karolina was 38 – 4 last season which bolstered her ranking to 8th on the WTA Tour but we all know the wrist issues have become more of a problem than anticipated.

OSAKA VS MUCHOVA H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Naomi Osaka and Karolina Muchova have split wins in two meetings, although a third meeting in 2022 at Miami saw Muchova bow out of the event giving Osaka a free pass.

The first two meetings went the distance as Osaka won the first clash at Cincinnati in 2020 while Muchova returned the favor on clay in Madrid in 2021 with a three-set victory.
