A week after opposing Naef with a lighter hitter and more consistent player from the baseline Burel, we’ll go ahead and back her in a matchup she’s tended to fare better in in the past as she plays Dodin.
She was actually originally slated to take on Burel for the second time in as many weeks before a withdrawal shook up the draw.
We talked last week about her being a little less reliable when forced to play more front foot tennis. That was on display against the Frenchwoman, who had her frustrated and shouting at herself after a slew of unforced errors.
In a more counterpunching role against someone who isn’t the best returner or mover, Naef’s decent serve should play up on quicker courts and be able to find her holds (as long as she doesn’t miss an uncharacteristic number of first serves), while he ability to redirect pace into the open court could see her use Dodin’s pacy groundstrokes against her.

Celine Naef Recent Form
The indoor form of the 19-year-old world No. 181 has been impressive, but I mentioned last week that a lot of the wins have come against some lesser opposition and should be taken with a pinch of salt.
I still believe that’s true, but the funny part is that she has two fairly decent wins indoors this fall. One of them came against….Dodin herself.
I think the key to this match for the Swiss has to be the first serve. Not just the pace on those deliveries, but more how often she can land them. They have a bit more bite than one may think and the quicker indoor courts should also help. Throw in a serve-oriented opponent and if she can land her first serves at a decent clip, we should see her be able to keep up with the big serving Frenchwoman if she hits a purple patch of her own.
This has to be one of the matches of the opening round, and I’m backing Naef to put on a repeat performance of what we saw between these two in Petange.
Oceane Dodin Recent Form
It feels as though Dodin is stuck between being too strong and having too much offensive firepower between her serve and forehand to be an ITF player, but is also too limited to be competitive consistently at the highest level.
Her current ranking just outside of the top-100 seems about right and her recent form on indoor hard courts speaks to her middling level.
She’s beaten the Fruhvirtova sisters, who were both once lauded as up-and-coming prospects, but who have been really bad in recent months, and then she also beat a slew of average-at-best type opponents.
The players that have weapons or are higher-end players like Ana Konjuh and Belinda Bencic have managed to sweep her aside.
Now, Naef may not be at Bencic’s level yet or have the big hitting ability of Konjuh, but she doesn’t mind playing against pace, is in good form and has enough talent stick with the likes of Dodin.
Celine Naef vs Oceane Dodin H2H – Stat of the Match
Dodin leads the series 2-1, with each player blowing the other out once and Dodin winning the rubber match in a tight three sets.
The most recent match saw Naef beat Dodin fairly soundly a few weeks ago in Luxembourg.
