I’m going to take a position against one of the more in-form players of the week here. It’s not something I’m excited to do, but because of his strong performances both on court and statistically, I think we’re seeing a bit of reactionary pricing from the market, allowing a bit of recency bias to come into play in this market.
I respect Majchrzak’s game and his service numbers have certainly been impressive for a clay court tournament so far, but I think even he’d admit to playing at a near-unsustainable level so far this week.
Muller is solid from the baseline, hits a heavy ball, has a sneakily strong serve himself – especially at altitude – and has proven more at the main tour level than his Polish counterpart who is still rebuilding after a suspension he maintains was unwarranted and unjust.
I think Majchrzak is a fine player and I’ve bet him in the past, but much like the first men’s bet of the day, I simply think he’s being given a tad too much credit for what he’s done this season in the betting markets.
Alexandre Muller Recent Form
Muller may have lost his first two matches of the season on the clay, but he’s since rebounded, winning five of his last six. His first match in Marrakech saw him need three sets, but he still managed to cover the handicap with relative ease and the first set he lost in a tiebreak, he was probably the better player anyway.
Throw in a final at the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro, with wins against phenom Joao Fonseca (although a tired version of the upstart Brazilian), Francisco Cerundolo, Francisco Comesana and Tomas Martin Etcheverry, and I think Muller has done plenty to prove himself at this level on clay courts.
I mentioned above his serve is probably underrated a tad and that’s my best guess as to why the betting markets continue to undervalue him. Once more, he finds himself in that position as he’s barely been tagged as the favourite against an opponent who has found the vast majority of his success down on the Challenger Tour.
Let’s hope he continues to prove people wrong!
Kamil Majchrzak Recent Form
After a slow start to the 2025 season, Majchrzak has picked it up in recent weeks. He qualified for Indian Wells before withdrawing and while I’m sure he was disappointed with his showing in Miami, he lost to a big hitter and one of the better youngsters in men’s tennis.
Since landing in Morocco, the 29-year-old has racked up four victories, beating a pair of solid clay court Challenger players in qualifying, a temperamental Jaume Munar in the first round and then a clearly-fatiguing Jesper de Jong last time out.
The only real quality and comparable win to who he’ll be squaring off with on Friday was Munar in a match the Spaniard was noticeably frustrated in as he was far from his best.
He’ll have to continue to serve extremely well and play a patient and solid match to pick up another win against a tour level regular this time out.
It’s possible, and he could stay en fuego, but I don’t think it’s all that likely.
