Someday I’ll be able to stop betting on Shang, but Wednesday is not that day. This is a price that seems to believe far more in a volatile and emotional Moutet far more than I do against a very talented young gun that has a very nice, well-rounded game.

A lot of people often mention the advantage lefties can have in tennis with certain tactics being super effective (the slide serve out wide on the AD side, for instance). Well, that’s a wash in this one with both guys being southpaws.

I don’t think either of these guys hits the biggest of balls, but I’d give a slight edge to Shang in the first serve and finishing power departments. He’s also more emotionally sound on the court, as Moutet is one of the guys on tour well known for blowing up often when he feels slighted or has a bad patch of play.

Variety, creativity, and consistency would favor the Frenchman and to me, this is a very even matchup that in the long run should prove profitable to bet on the very talented underdog. My Moutet vs Shang name prediction is for Shang to win.

Corentin Moutet Recent Form

After a lot of struggles in 2023 recovering from a wrist issue that didn’t allow him to hit his normal backhand, Moutet is finally looking more and more like the player who once knocked on the door of the world’s top 50.

He began his 2024 during the Golden Swing in South America and has played exclusively on the clay so far this season, reaching a semifinal in Santiago, another at a higher-end Challenger tournament, and qualifying for a quartet of ATP Tour events.

While his lone signature win came in Chile against home favorite Nicolas Jarry, he’s taken care of business against players you’d expect him to if he is to continue making strides toward being the player he was a few years back.

Though many will say he’s underpowered, I like the deceiving pace he can muster on his serves down the T and if you leave a forehand short, he’s more than capable of putting it away.

That said, his strengths lie in his variety, with strong slices and a nice drop-shot, along with the ability to generate angles and hit with a variation of spins that can disrupt an opponent’s timing.

He’s got his weaknesses as well, but I’m a fan of the well-rounded game he possesses. In other circumstances and against other players, I would find myself backing him. Against one of the better teens playing at the professional level though, I struggle to make him the clear favourite.

Juncheng Shang Recent Form

It seems odd to say that a 19-year-old not yet reaching the top 100 is a bit disappointing, but considering how long we’ve known about Shang’s talent, I think that descriptor is accurate.

To his credit, he is currently at a career-high ranking and now just 11 spots from that coveted top-100 ranking. A win in this one would move him even closer, as it would vault him to No. 103 in the live rankings. Should the IMG-represented player manage to win this match and the next, it’d likely mean a top-100 debut in just over a week.

He doesn’t have overwhelming power, but he can still generate free points behind his serve, crack the ball from both wings, and get around the court nicely. His game translates across surfaces that inside-out forehand is already one of my favorites you’ll find in the game.

The downside? A lot of sloppy errors. First, he can often be found reaching for his backhands and putting them into the net. The other issue with the errors? They tend to come at inopportune times. Too often he’s right in the thick of a return game, leading 15-30 and in control of a point that could give him two important chances to break serve when he’ll uncork a wild shot. That doesn’t go down as a break point missed or game point blown, but those are the types of points that lead to him playing as many close matches as he does.

If he can clean his game up a bit, he’s going places and will live up to the hype that’s surrounded him since he was a junior.

Corentin Moutet vs Juncheng Shang H2H – Stat of the Match

With Moutet having been hurt in recent times and Shang being so young and just making his way onto the tour, it’s no surprise these two have yet to clash.

I will say that a matchup of two left-handers that can both bring excellent shotmaking to the table and sustain longer rallies should make for some great tennis. The difference in demeanors on the court should also provide an interesting contrast, with the younger player being the one who tends to remain more composed.
