The second preview of the day also comes from the Brisbane International, and once again comes from a tightly-priced contest. It’s Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy in a battle of generations down under!

Basavareddy’s win probability is almost exactly 50%, while Monfils is the slight favourite to win at 1.85 odds. The handicap is 0.5 games and the total games line is 22.5.

Jon Reid’s Monfils vs Basavareddy prediction is for Monfils to win.

Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy Prediction: Not Ready to Make Basavareddy Even With Monfils Just Yet

  • Prediction: Monfils to win
  • Best Odds: 1.85
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 2/10

Odds as at 3:00 am UK Time on December 30th, 2024. Odds may now differ.

As impressive as the record and late-season run was for Basavareddy, the fact is, he remains underpowered when playing on the main tour relative to his competition and he continues to win close matches against middling opposition.

His second serve needs serious work and his forehand lacks power. We’ll go over his form and why I’m not totally convinced by it in a minute. Ultimately, I’m going to be opposing him fairly regularly this season with the way he’s being priced. I actually backed him last round thanks to a favourable situation regarding his opponent, but on a wider scale, I’ll be looking for opportunities to get prices like this.

Monfils doesn’t have a long time left at the professional level, but his serve is still monstrous, he has the shotmaking and athleticism that leaves people’s jaws on the ground and he’s pretty solid from the baseline.

With this being his first match of the new season and fatigue not a major concern, I’ll gladly take the better player at a cheap price.

Gael Monfils Recent Form

Not only is Monfils likely to be rejuvenated after an offseason, but he shouldn’t be rusty either, since he played the December UTS event. Now, that is meaningless from a win-loss perspective since it’s a gimmicky exhibition with entirely different scoring, but it does mean he’s had some sort of competitive tennis in his legs to keep him fresh.

Throw in quicker courts to help keep points short behind that big first serve, and I love the spot for him here, with fatigue incredibly unlikely to come into play.

With Basavareddy’s biggest strength being his ability to outlast his opponents, that’s key.

Let’s see if Monfils can get his 2025 season going with a victory down under in Queensland!

Nishesh Basavareddy Recent Form

The 19-year-old American has picked up right where he left off in 2024, where he was on a tear on the Challenger Tour to end the year (his efforts earned him the American reciprocal wild card into the main draw of the Australian Open in a few weeks).

Against some of the best young players in the world, he did struggle a bit in Saudi Arabia earlier this month and his wins in qualifying were a come from behind victory against a poor returner whose backhand looked horrible on the day and then against a player that has struggled physically for a few years now coming off a long match that was one of the later matches the day prior.

Fortunate is one way of putting it. He also did very little against good competition in his runs last season. Monfils will be his biggest test in some time. He’s no longer one of the best players in the world, so that statement should tell you all you need to know about the quality of competition he’s been playing.

Gael Monfils vs Nishesh Basavareddy H2H – Stat of the Match

With Basavareddy being so new to the main tour and having played primarily on the Challenger circuit in the Americas, along with the age difference, it’s no surprise that this is the first encounter between these two.
