This match is one worth watching for numerous reasons. For starters, it has some real potential from an entertainment standpoint. These two both prefer to be indoors and playing in quicker conditions, so they’ll both feel right at home.

Second, it’s worth watching to get to know two players’ games better for future bets and to try to stay out ahead of the betting markets.

Finally, it’s worth betting on because Monday – though less known on the professional circuit because of his time playing NCAA Tennis in the United States – is the better between the two. Let’s break down why.

Not only can he match Rehberg in terms of firepower, but I’d make the case that his serve is actually bigger and his first forehands are more punishing. Next, his backhand is more reliable than the German’s, meaning in the crosscourt exchanges where they’ll each be hitting forehands into the other’s backhand, I trust him to squander fewer points. His slice can also keep rallies alive and the ball low and out of the optimal hitting zone of Rehberg.

Finally, the control to go with the aggression is something Monday has developed to a much greater extent than the man that is about one year his junior.

Breaks may be tough to come by, so there is a minimal risk to this approach, but in terms of likelihoods and probabilities, Monday is the far more likely player to break in my books.

Johannus Monday Recent Form

The start to the year has been lovely for the big lefty from Hull. I’m actually willing to tip him to finish the year inside the world’s top-150 (currently ranked at No. 300). He has ample opportunities to pick up ranking points and should receive wild cards into British grass events – tournaments his game was tailor made for success in (big serve, powerful forehand, effective backhand slice that he’s willing to utilise).

He’s already won a title at the lower ITF Tour in 2025, and other than a few losses to fellow former collegiate player Chris Rodesch and a random defeat to a clay courter in slower hard court conditions, he’s been unstoppable.

This tournament has already seen him play two strong servers, including one of the best juniors of the last year, Reik Sakamoto, followed by fellow lefty server Giles Hussey. He beat them both in straight sets, covered the -2.5 games in both and covered the -3 games in the most recent, pushing the first round -3.

Though he’s been a favourite in recent matches, I do think he’s still undervalued as he should be a larger favourite in these conditions against a lot of the players he’s taking on (Sakamoto being the exception).

I’m going to continue backing him until he’s priced up as the favourite I think he should be.

Max Hans Rehberg Recent Form

Indoors and clay. That’s all Rehberg has played on the ITF or ATP circuits in the last few years. No European is going to get away from playing at least some court tennis. It’s far too accessible and parts of the calendar only offer tournaments on the dirt.

The now-world No. 256 (his career high, by the way) clearly prefers these conditions, where his do-or-die type of approach to tennis is rewarded a bit more and the volatile, erratic play can be masked.

Still, the errors are a bit too commonplace in his game and his backhand can let him down fairly often (not exactly a great weakness to have when playing a lefty with big power).

That’s the obstacle that’s holding his ceiling down and not letting him break into the world’s top-200 or top-150. It’s also what makes him a bit worse than Monday and what makes him vulnerable in this match.

Johannus Monday vs Max Hans Rehberg H2H – Stat of the Match

The former collegiate tennis player (Monday) and talented youngster just now breaking out (Rehberg) haven’t yet had a chance to cross paths. This should be a dandy of a contest with the ball striking on display from both. I simply think that Monday is more reliable and consistent with said power and doesn’t get himself in trouble as often in his own service games with silly mistakes as the German tends to do.
