As impressive as Michelsen has been in 2024, I’ve been a big proponent that his move up the rankings has been fueled in large part by his scheduling and the quality of his opponent (or lack thereof, for the most part).

From weeks before slams to a post-Wimbledon grass tournament to a late-season run here, a lot of the success for Michelsen has come at the 250 level and in fields that tend to be weaker.

I do think he’s a strong player and don’t want to come off as a hater, but I just don’t think his baseline game is nearly strong enough yet to be seeing these kinds of favorite prices.

He was just about eliminated last round as a massive favorite against an aging veteran and his last two losses have both come as a favorite, which indicates a potential overvaluation in the market on the young gun from the United States.

Alex Michelsen Recent Form

Now over 40 wins for the year, it’s been a solid season of progress for Michelsen. As I alluded to, he’s beaten a lot of easier opponents, but wins on the ATP Tour are wins on the ATP Tour and that’s a solid start.

There’s still work to be done in adding pace to his forehand, but he’s a smart player, and has a decent serve and a strong backhand. That is enough to take you places and probably make you a top-40 to top-50 kind of player.

This week saw him beat a young Frenchman who is also somewhat underpowered and then barely get by Richard Gasquet in a match that he needed to save match points in.

He’ll certainly have the edge in terms of solidity in this matchup, but there is the possibility that Yunchaokete can take the racquet out of his hands.

Bu Yunchaokete Recent Form

The volatile nature of Yunchaokete’s boom-or-bust type game has been illustrated by his results in the last few months. After announcing his presence in China at tournaments in Hangzhou and Beijing with semifinal appearances (and wins against Karen Khachanov, Lorenzo Musetti, and Andrey Rublev to boot).

From there, it was just two wins from six matches across stops in Shanghai, Almaty, Vienna, and Paris.

Now he’s back into the final eight once more in Metz as inches towards the world’s top 60.

Equipped with big groundstrokes and an aggressive baseline game, Yunchaokete has the weapons to stick with the very best. It’s about refining his game and adding some more consistency if he wants to take that next step.

Alex Michelsen vs Bu Yunchaokete H2H – Stat of the Match

Michelsen did beat Yunchaokete a few weeks ago in Shanghai, which could very well be influencing some of the early moves in the market favoring the 20-year-old. That was their lone match.
