This match a few weeks back would’ve been a pass for me. Medjedovic does seem to be back on track at the moment though and the decision to head down to the Challenger Tour to re-discover his form appears to be paying off.

His game isn’t nearly as reliant on just the first serve and forehand as Gojo’s is. Though Gojo came back to win his first match thanks to Luca van Assche fading, it’ll be much tougher for him to generate break chances in this match against an opponent who can match his firepower.

Hamad Medjedovic Recent Form

After an incredible 2023 season that helped him get within touching distance of the world’s top 100, Medjedovic wasn’t able to break through and now sits in the 130-140 range. He didn’t play all that much at the start of the year and after decent showings in Madrid and Rome during the clay swing, he’s been downright disappointing.

There have been a few concerns with his development, from physical breakdowns to poor attitude to motivational questions. Those all seemed to show up at different points in the last several months, with some poor results and seven losses as a favorite from the French Open onwards.

That is what likely prompted him to make the drop back to a lower circuit to regain his form and find some wins to get that confidence back.

It worked. He made the final in Istanbul, losing to Damir Dzumhur who now has five trophies on the Challenger Tour this year. His first match in Orleans also went well, as he beat Alexey Vatutin by a six-game margin.

Sure, Gojo is a tougher opponent, but that’s also reflected in a handicap of just two games (and two games at a fairly cheap price, no less). I’m going to back a player I still believe is one of the better prospects in the sport, despite a rough summer.

Borna Gojo Recent Form

I can’t fault Gojo too much for his poor form of late. The 26-year-old broke into the top 100 and appeared to be making progress before an injury sidelined him for about seven months just two tournaments into the 2024 season.

He has a very nice serve and powerful forehand, but I do feel like his game lacks dimension, and that creates a sort of ceiling to how high he can go.

He’s only beaten Nick Hardt in U.S. Open qualifying (Hardt is a clay courter) and van Assche since coming back in tour events and this is a big ask, considering how talented Medjedovic is and the fact he seems to have put a poor summer behind him.

Hamad Medjedovic vs Borna Gojo H2H – Stat of the Match

Gojo won the lone prior meeting between these two at the U.S. Open in 2023. It was a very close affair, and I’d make the case that with the progression of Medjedovic and the lack of play this year for Gojo, Medjedovic is a well-deserved favorite and I’d trust him to come through far more often than not.
