It’s a double dip from the ATP’s Belgrade Open. For our second preview, we look at the other semifinal – Hamad Medjedovic vs Laslo Djere!

Djere’s win probability is just under 50%, with Medjedovic entering as the favorite at 1.81 odds. The handicap is 0.5 games and the total games line is 23.

Jon Reid’s Medjedovic vs Djere prediction is for Medjedovic to win.

Hamad Medjedovic vs Laslo Djere Prediction: Youngster Poised for Big Week in Serbian Capital

  • Prediction: Medjedovic to win
  • Best Odds: 1.81
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 4/10

Odds updated at 1:00 am UK Time on November 8th, 2024.

I was pretty sure Medjedovic was going to be a favorite in this match when he and Djere both won their quarterfinal matches, but I didn’t envisage him being 1.81. That price is one I’m happy to back on a hard court – one that Medjedovic has said he enjoys and suits his style.

We have the player with the bigger weapons and who has the much higher ceiling. We’ve also seen Medjedovic look much stronger this week than he has in recent months, where he’s looked lethargic and sometimes uninterested.

With the home crowd at his back (though they may be split in this all-Serbian tilt), he’s looked like the player that has that top-20 potential many in the tennis community have been forecasting.

Djere is a quality player and in the last few years has become sneakily competitive on this surface. His game doesn’t warrant only being a slight underdog in this matchup, however.

Hamad Medjedovic Recent Form

The aforementioned sluggish play seemed to be continuing into this week for the 21-year-old, as he was broken early and looked dejected against American Brandon Nakashima.Once his serve became more dependable in the second set and his power took over the match and pushed Nakashima further back behind the baseline, we saw that confidence grow and the belief return almost instantly.

Since that second set, where he let out a roar after taking it 7-5, Medjedovic has not lost a set, including in a dominant quarterfinal win against Francisco Cerundolo.

The world No. 29 isn’t a hard courter by nature, but then again, neither is Medjedovic’s semifinal opponent in Djere.

Perhaps this is a blip, or maybe it’s a sign of 2025 being the potential breakout campaign for the youngster. All I know is when he’s in form, there are very few players I wouldn’t have him favored against at the 250 level. Djere certainly isn’t one of the few, and giving Medjedovic a 55% chance, rather than being over 60% is incorrect by my numbers.

Laslo Djere Recent Form

One of the good stories of the week, Djere has come through each of his three matches in straight sets. Worth noting that Fabian Marozsan is extremely error prone, Duje Ajdukovic is more of a clay player and hasn’t had much success above the Challenger Tour and Stan Wawrinka has reverted to looking his age though.

Djere has also racked up losses to the likes of Constant Lestienne and Martin Landaluce in recent times and trusting him on hard courts as a slight underdog isn’t something I’m a fan of.

He has more weapons now than a few years back and his serve is a little better, but if Medjedovic is engaged and able to put balls in play on return, it could be a long day for the elder of the two Serbians.

Hamad Medjedovic vs Laslo Djere H2H – Stat of the Match

Djere leads 2-1 here and the fact that he won in Stockholm a few weeks ago is certainly causing the market to give him more respect than he may deserve.

There could be a hint of recency bias at play, as well as the fact that I wouldn’t have Djere winning more than 40-45% of the time on an indoor hard court. If he can go back-to-back against Medjedovic indoors in the span of a few weeks, fair play to him.
