McCartney Kessler and Elina Avanesyan square off in the semifinals of the Hobart International Tournament on Thursday in Australia, and the Armenian native arrives as the favorite.

Kessler plowed over her first three opponents this week without losing a set and the American has faced some quality players en route to the semis.

Elina Avanesyan gained her spot in the semifinal after Amanda Anisimova withdrew from the event on Tuesday but the Armenian native will take it however it comes.

EJ Garr’s prediction for McCartney Kessler vs. Elina Avanesyan calls for the upset with odds at +127 which you can find below.

McCartney Kessler vs Elina Avanesyan WTA Hobart International Prediction: An Upset Brewing

  • Prediction: McCartney Kessler to win
  • Best Odds: +127
  • Bookmaker: Pinnacle
  • Stakes: 3/10

Odds as of 7:00 am UK Time on January 9, 2024. Odds may now differ.

Elina Avanesyan didn’t have to lift a racquet in the quarterfinal of the Hobart International after Amanda Anisimova pulled herself from the event. Anisimova has struggled with injuries since the last few events of the 2024 campaign and the American will have to deal with that issue before the first Major of the season next week.

With the Australian Open wrapping up qualifying today, the main draw will be filled soon and we can only assume Ansimova will not be there. Regardless, Avanesyan was the underdog going into that quarterfinal affair, so reaching the semifinals without a fight must be nice.

The Armenian native has faced two qualifiers this week and didn’t struggle with either en route to straight-set wins. After the cruise past Xiyu Wang, Greet Minnen was the second victim for Avanesyan and that might not impress many of us.

Kessler defeated the 7-seeded Rebecca Sramkova in the opening round and a 6 – 2, 6 – 2 win over Maria Carle pushed the American into the quarterfinal yesterday. The 25-year-old American native was favored at -165 to ease past Dayana Yastremska and did so with a sweep into the semifinals of the Hobart International.

Keep in mind, Kessler debuted at a major event last season at the Australian Open, so her eyes might be distracted by the sight of that big tourney on deck.

With Kessler playing the underdog role, I will back the American native to reach the finals and play for a title.

MCCARTNEY KESSLER RECENT FORM

McCartney Kessler is ranked 67th on the WTA Tour and is 4 – 1 over the last 5 outings.

Kessler hasn’t reached the semifinal of an event since August in Cleveland as part of her four titles in 2024.

With a 37 – 14 record on hard courts dating back to last season, Kessler will relish the underdog role and end up in the finals.

ELINA AVANESYAN RECENT FORM

The 22-year-old Armenian native is ranked 44th on the WTA Tour and hasn’t been pushed hard in this event. Avanesyan will be well-rested and eager to reach the finals without having to face Anisimova in the quarters.

Avanesyan didn’t hoist any hardware in 2024 and had a 13 – 14 on hard courts a year ago.

With a 29 – 24 record in 2024, Avaenesyan has produced five straight seasons with a winning record.
