Daria Kasatkina has twice the pressure on her shoulders because the WTA Finals loom in November. Ranked 9th to start the week in Tokyo, Kasatkina is still in the mix to land one of the eight available slots in Saudi Arabia, and keeping a top-10 status is vital to getting there.

The Kessler vs. Cocciaretto match was on T2 last night, and I am impressed with the American’s lower body strength. McCartney has been hitting the gym and she looks in fantastic shape using those legs as a base to pound shots from the baseline.

About 27 people attended the match, all in the shade behind the players and the main stands were empty in Tokyo. It felt like 2020 when fans weren’t allowed to attend anything. I imagine it would be tough for a player to come out and get excited to perform in front of a crowd that isn’t there.

While Kessler eased past Cocciaretto in straight sets breaking the Italian six times, Kasatkina arrives in Tokyo as the Ningbo Open champion looking to build on that momentum.

Kasatkina jumped into the top 10 WTA Rankings when they were announced on Monday. Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina, and Emma Navarro are questionable to participate in the WTA Finals, and a deep run in Tokyo will keep Kasatkina in the running for one of the top 7 available entries.

We’re going the distance so buckle up for a great battle between Kessler and Kasatkina at the Pan Pacific Open.

MCCARTNEY KESSLER RECENT FORM

McCartney Kessler is 9 – 4 over the last 13 outings starting with the 5 – 0 run to the title in Cleveland.

The tourney win in Ohio marked Kessler’s first WTA-level trophy among the three others secured at the ITF/Challenger level in 2024.

Kessler is 33 – 12 on hard this season and is one victory away from putting up a 40-win campaign (39 – 23).

DARIA KASATKINA RECENT FORM

Kasatkina was credited with four wins at the Ningbo Open although Paula Badosa couldn’t finish the semifinal match and retired. Badosa lost the first set, 6 – 4, and medical was called to check her blood pressure and vitals.

Kasatkina landed in the final and defeated Mirra Andreeva in three sets to claim the Ningbo Open hardware.

With a 23 – 15 record on hard courts, Kasatkina is also chasing win #40 in 2024 (39 – 21).

KESSLER VS KASATKINA H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Today’s second-round match at the Pan Pacific Open marks the first meeting between McCartney Kessler and Daria Kasatkina.

The winner of this affair will advance to face either Sofia Kenin or Clara Tauson in the quarterfinals.
