Daria Saville, Emiliana Arango, and Maya Joint were all underdogs in the previous round, and all three are in the quarterfinals. Arango backed into the quarters after Francesca Jones retired, but we’re here to discuss Maya Joint’s effort.

Joint was barely an underdog at +118 against Donna Vekic, and that was not a disrespectful line. We have to call that a mild upset, but was it? By the way, what the hell is happening with Vekic this season? There is no way on God’s green Earth that Vekic stays in the top-25 after losing four straight, but that’s her problem..

Joint didn’t just beat Vekic, Maya tore her to pieces losing only three games against the Croatian native in the second round.

Maya Joint started the week ranked 103rd on the WTA Tour, but is performing like a player who should be closer to 50th. 

The American native spent the first 16 years of her life in Michigan, but relocated to Brisbane to support her father’s flag. The now Australian citizen skipped going to Texas University (Hook ‘Em Horns), and decided to go pro.

Joint won a match at last year’s US Open to earn her first Major win at 17.

With a 14 – 5 singles record in 2025, Joint and partner Taylah Preston won the doubles event in Cancun last week. 

ELINA AVANESYAN RECENT FORM

Elina Avanesyan is ranked 45th on the WTA Tour and is 8 – 6 from 14 outings in 2025.

The Armenian native produced a 29 – 24 record in 2024, completing a fifth straight campaign with a winning record.

Avanesyan has won four career ITF tournament titles, the highest level being a WTA100 event at Wiesbaden in 2023.
