Marketa Vondrousova vs Mayar Sherif (National Bank Open): Tuesday, August 8th

Never easy with Sloane Stephens, but she does get the job done in the end, and does so in straight sets against Anhelina Kalinina at the National Bank Open.

Tuesday sees the completion of the first round and some second round tennis action from the WTA side of things in Montreal.

Our preview will focus on Marketa Vondrousova vs Mayar Sherif.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Mayar Sherif Expert Tip

Go ahead and mark me down as someone who believes this one is going to wrap up in a rather efficient manner.

Vondrousova is coming off a great Wimbledon campaign and is leagues ahead of Sherif on a hard court. With the possibilities for lopsided sets in this one, I’d have this set at 18.5 or 19 games, rather than the 19.5-game total we’re seeing at the moment.

Read on for more expert insights.

  • Expert Tip: Under 19.5 Games at 1.96 with Unibet, using 2/10 stakes.

Marketa Vondrousova Recent Form

I’d say the Czech’s recent form is as strong as it could possibly be. After all, her last match saw her win a grand slam title at the All England Club in London at the most prestigious tennis tournament in the world.

It was her first title of the year, but the 2023 season has been filled with promising starts to events that ended soon as she came up against some of the world’s best players.

Her incredibly crafty and consistent game from the baseline that can produce incredible angles and drag her opponents off the court was complemented by as strong a serve as we’ve seen from the 24-year-old. If she can bring that serve to this match, she has a great chance at posting two rather one-sided set scores.

Mayar Sherif Recent Form

Sherif’s form is almost always dependent on what event we’re talking about. If it’s a preview for a WTA 125K event on clay, I think we have to love her resume and pedigree at that level, as she has been incredibly dominant at those tournaments since their inception.

On a hard court at the top end of the women’s game against a top-tier player of quality? Not so much.

The clay wins she’s racked up this year are hard to trust, since the way she grips her racquet is so well suited to the red dirt courts, but means she’s also bound to struggle away from it.

They’ve also come, for the most part, against a much lower level of competition.

In terms of tour-level play, the Egyptian has five wins on hard courts, with the best of those coming against Xinyu Wang.

Not exactly an encouraging record.

The grass season saw her go 1-2 and play some more respectable matches, thanks to her fairly strong first serve, but once again, she didn’t play anyone I’d consider to be near the quality of Vondrousova.

Marketa Vondrousova vs Mayar Sherif H2H – Stat of the Match

This marks the first meeting between the two.

The statistic that best demonstrates the gulf between them for me is Sherif’s hold plus break percentage of just under 83% on hard courts at the top level in the last year.

A number in the 95%-100% range is considered just below average, so to be below 85% would be a pretty strong indicator to me that Sherif is probably one of the worst players on the surface among the world’s top-40.

If Vondrousova is checked in mentally coming off her run at Wimbledon, she should win this one easily.

Odds as at 4:30 am UK Time on August 8th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
