Mai Hontama was a +240 underdog against top-seeded Yaztremska and a straight-sets win over the Ukrainian is certainly a confidence builder. 

Hontama had lost three of her last four outings coming to Hua Hin so the upset win to start the event takes some pressure off the Japanese native. That will all change on Wednesday facing underdog status again in the second round against a player ranked 184th on the WTA Tour.

Hontama is the one ranked 130th and that goes to show you how much emphasis the line setters put on rankings. Being in Thailand will make Tararudee a better tennis player because that’s how it works, right? 

I will call for the local favorite to push Hontama to three sets because Hontama will put up a good fight today as the slight underdog. When Mia becomes aware that she is expected to lose to the 184th-ranked player on tour, that had better fire her up to battle even harder. 

Hontama eliminated the 38th-ranked player on tour in the opening round although we all know that Yastremska wasn’t going deep into this event.

Tararudee arrived in Korea for the WTA100 event in Incheon last week and made a trip to the semifinal to begin the Asian swing. Wildcard Thasaporn Nakio took only one game from Lanlana in the opening round that lasted 53 minutes.

Hontama and Tararudee will go the distance today and the +145 offer on the Over 2.5 Sets prop sets up nicely with value.

Mai Hontama battled top-seeded Yastremska to a 7 – 6, 7 – 5 win in the first round as a +240 underdog. That’s an impressive way to open an event and the line setters are still asking for even money on a Hontama win today even though Tararudee is favored.

Hontama is in jeopardy of having a losing record on all three surfaces in 2024. With a 22 – 20 record on hardcourts, Mia must play well in Asia to keep that record above. 500.

LANLANA TARARUDEE RECENT FORM

Tararudee is mostly competing in ITF/Challenger level events, but the Thai native has six titles over the last two campaigns. 

Lanlana reeled out a 43 – 20 record in 2023 and has a  37 – 20 tally this campaign as the 20-year-old has jumped up 53 spots in the rankings since the start of the season.
