Tatjana Maria was one set away from taking the title in Surbiton to open her grass campaign, and the 36-year-old German native is no stranger to this surface. 

Maria has compiled a winning record on grass every season since 2015, and she has a couple of grasscourt titles from Southsea in 2017 and Mallorca in 2018.

Since her first appearance on grass back in 2015, Magda Frech is 23 – 19 on grass and her 6 – 4 record last season was the best result of her career.
