Zeynep Sonmez will face Magda Linette with an appearance in the quarterfinals in the balance at the Merida Open.

The defending champion found an upset over Maria Sakkari in the opening round, and the Turkish native will be listed as the underdog again today against her Polska opponent.

Linette arrives at the second round listed as a -200 favorite to remove the 2024 title holder from the tournament, but our resident WTA expert has other ideas in mind.

EJ Garr’s prediction for Magda Linette vs. Zeynep Sonmez has odds of -116, which you can locate below.

Maria Sakkari choked in another event and Zeynep Sonmez provided the first big upset of the Merida Open on Monday over the favored Greece native.

At the beginning of the season, I mentioned that Sakkari would be ranked outside of the top 50 before the end of the campaign. Sakkari is well on her way there after getting ousted by Zeynep Sonmez as a +240 underdog, and the Merida Open defending champ earned a straight-sets win to land in the second round.

Did Sonmez overachieve or is Sakkari on the verge of giving up on her tennis career? Let’s go with a little of both because Sonmez is inspired to be here as the defending champ of this WTA500 event, and Sakkari is playing pickleball!

Sonmez has struggled to find wins in 2025, and the Turk has yet to win back-to-back outings this season. Let’s be honest. Sonmez has four wins this year against opponents she should have easily beaten and she did. Everything else has been a complete disaster until the upset over Sakkari, and Magda Linette might snap the Turk back in her place.

We enjoyed Linette’s easy win over Cocciaretto on Monday, and that was like taking candy from a baby. Outclassing the Italian was to be expected, but I hope the win over Sakkari inspires Sonmez to continue her great play at this venue.

Players need to find inspiration however they can, and if Sonmez is feeling confident at this venue, let’s oblige her with a play on the +3.5 with a marginal juice of -116.

MAGDA LINETTE RECENT FORM

Magda Linette started the week ranked 37th, and the 33-year-old Polska native is 6 – 6 in 2025.

Linette went 1 – 3 to open the campaign in Australia and has yet to win more than a pair of matches in any tournament appearance this season.

Magda was 31 – 27 in 2024 with an 11 – 16 record on hard courts.

ZEYNEP SONMEZ RECENT FORM

Zeynep Sonmez started the week ranked 88th on the WTA Tour. The Turk is 5 – 6 in 2025 trying to get back to an even record.

Sonmez will need another big effort against a top-40 opponent in Mexico after taking out 29th-ranked Sakkari in the opening round.

The Turk was 41 – 25 in 2024 with a winning record on all three surfaces.

LINETTE VS SONMEZ HTH –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Linette and Sonmez will meet for the first time today at the Merida Open.

The winner of this match will face top-seeded Emma Navarro or qualifier Petra Martic in the quarterfinals.
