Lorenzo Sonego vs Alexander Shevchenko (Western & Southern Open): Monday, August 14th

Another good breakdown for the match, but it wasn’t rewarded, as Andy Murray came on court in sweats to announce he was withdrawing from the tournament. We can be happy that the physical edge for Sinner was properly identified nonetheless, however.

Onto Cincinnati and the Western & Southern Open. The ATP joins the WTA at the same venue this time around at yet another Masters 1000 event for the men.

For Monday’s tennis preview, it’s Lorenzo Sonego vs Alexander Shevchenko that is showing some value for my money.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Alexander Shevchenko Expert Tip

I’m happy to bet on the underdog in this one. Sonego simply isn’t this much better than other talented players on a hard court, can play close sets which would suit an underdog bet just fine and hasn’t looked the best of late.

Shevchenko is probably still seen by the market as a Challenger Tour player, but the youngster can play some really high-level tennis.

Read on for more expert insights.

  • Expert Tip: Shevchenko to win at 2.78 with Pinnacle, using 2/10 stakes.

Lorenzo Sonego Recent Form

It’s been a rough go for the Italian since reaching the second week of the French Open. He has managed just a few wins in his last seven events and was beaten in the most recent set he played 6-0 by Andy Murray in Toronto.

He has a strong serve and decent forehand, but it’s hard to really pin down anything else he does all that well.

It’s hard to justify his pricing here, considering how poor he’s looked both on the whole of late and on outdoor hard courts in 2023 (he’s lost more matches than he’s won).

Alexander Shevchenko Recent Form

The 22-year-old has fared a bit better this summer, with a few wins in Washington and now having come through the qualifying draw at this event in Cincinnati.

The most impressive part of his hard-court summer has been that his four wins have all come when he’s been priced as the underdog. That tells me there’s still an undervaluation of his game in the betting markets.

He’s also beaten plenty of ATP Tour level competition on hard courts this season, dating back to the Phoenix Challenger where he picked up some strong wins against players not typically found in Challenger fields.

With plenty of power from the baseline, he should have the ability to play the match on his terms if he’s hitting his spots.

Lorenzo Sonego vs Alexander Shevchenko H2H – Stat of the Match

These two have yet to play at the professional level.

Another reason I like this selection comes down to Sonego’s struggles on the return of serve. Over the last 52 weeks on hard courts, the Italian has broken just 15% of the time and won fewer than a third of points on return.

Combined with Shevchenko’s decent serve and power from the baseline to back it up, we should see this one be at least close more often than not.

Odds as at 5:00 am UK Time on August 14th, 2023. Odds may now differ.
