One place that Jelena Ostapenko loves to play is right here in Doha. The Latvian national has been a finalist and a semifinalist in this event and is 7 – 0 in the first round of the Qatar Open.

Ostapenko has struggled to win more than two matches in any event, and the Latvian native hasn’t won back-to-back outings since Wimbledon last season. This is the tenth event for Ostapenko since Wimbledon, and the Latvian native has only three victories since the trip to London.

Liudmila Samsonova had never won a match in Doha before the first-round win against Lulu Sun. Samsonova started the 2025 campaign with a shaky effort at Brisbane that amounted to a first-round loss but responded with three wins at Adelaide.

Unfortunately, Samsonova had to withdraw from Adelaide and is 2 – 2 over the last four outings.

This match is a coin-flip situation in every sense of the word. No one will be surprised if either of them flops out of the event. Let’s hope it doesn’t get too ugly. 

I am counting on Ostapenko’s history at this venue to find a win over Samsonova with a +108 from Pinnacle. The epic flop for Ostapenko to end last season is still on my mind. It has been a rough road since Wimbledon for the Latvian native with a 2 – 10 record since leaving London, but I give her the nod over Samsonova with plus-money action.

Liudmila Samsonova is 2 – 3 in the last five outings since winning three games at Adelaide. The 16-seed in this WTA1000 event starts the week ranked 23rd on the WTA Tour and was 12 – 15 on hard courts last season.

With a 26 – 23 record in 2024, Samsonova completed a seventh straight season in the positive. 

JELENA OSTAPENKO RECENT FORM

Jelena Ostapenko finished the 2024 campaign with a 1 – 6 record and opened the 2025 campaign with an opening-round loss at Brisbane.

Ostapenko enters the week ranked 37th on the WTA Tour and is participating in the doubles event at Doha.

The Latvian native went 21 – 19 last season with title wins at Adelaide and Linz.

Liudmila Samsonova and Jelena Ostapenko have met four times on the WTA tour since 2020.

Ostapenko won their first clash at the 2020 Australian Open and was victorious in their next battle a year later at Luxembourg.
