At the top of Section 2 at the China Open, Liudmila Samsonova and Cristina Bucsa will battle for a position in the third round at this WTA1000 event on Friday in Beijing.

Bucsa was barely challenged in the first round against XinXin Yao but the Spaniard is facing a difficult task as a heavy underdog in China.

At odds reaching as high as -675, Samsonova isn’t expected to be challenged by Bucsa in the least and our resident WTA expert agrees with them.

EJ Garr’s Liudmila Samsonova vs. Cristina Bucsa prediction leans on the total with odds at -108 which can be found below.

Liudmila Samsonova vs Cristina Bucsa Prediction: Spaniard A Heavy Underdog

When I see lines like -625, -700, and higher, the only thing that goes through my mind is how bad it must be for that underdog to be that disrespected

Did you see that Yao match with Bucsa on Tennis2 last night? I have seen some bad tennis in my day but I don’t even want to call Yao’s effort an actual effort!

So many points ended with Yao just standing there agreeing with the fact that she has zero ability to chase a damn thing down. Seriously, I was sitting here yelling at the TV… “Move”! She never did and now Yao is moving on to the next event.

I can’t give Bucsa more than a C for her effort either because that win looks easy on paper but the Spaniard made so many stupid mistakes that lengthened the match. Yao broke Bucsa twice in the second set and one was simply at the wrong time up 5 – 2 and serving to shut the door!

Liudmila is going to have plenty of success breaking Bucsa’s serve and the Spaniard is in a boatload of trouble today. I am pointing to this because I have no faith that Bucsa is going to make this competitive match.

Let’s call for a 6 – 1, 6 – 3 generously with that second set trio of games for the Spaniard, and last I checked that is 16 games. We have 19.5 games to play with so bank on the total to cash the ticket.

LIUDMILA SAMSONOVA RECENT FORM

Samsonova played like rubbish against Veronika Kudermetova in Seoul! Garbage, Junk!

A match with Bucsa should rebuild some of that confidence as she tries to shake off a two-match skid but we won’t get on her case for losing to Iga Swiatek.

Samsonova reeled off three wins in Cincinnati and a trio at the US Open before losing to Swiatek in the Major.

CRISTINA BUCSA RECENT FORM

Bucsa is 2 – 5 in the last 7 outings and hasn’t won back-to-back matches since May in Strasbourg.

Cristina is ranked 79th on the WTA Tour and she’ll be playing in the doubles event earlier today with her partner Monico Niculescu.

Bucsa is 9 – 14 on hardcourts this season and has a 19 – 25 record in 2024. Unless the Spaniard can turn that record around she is facing her first losing campaign since turning pro in 2019.

SAMSONOVA VS BUCSA H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Today’s clash in Beijing will mark the first meeting between Liudmila Samsonova and Cristina Bucsa on any surface.

The winner of this match will advance to face either Elisabetta Cocciaretto or Elise Mertens in the third round in Section 2 of the China Open this weekend.
