Anna Blinkova holds the 5-seed at the Merida Open and will be the favorite against Lesia Tsurenko in the first round on Monday in Mexico.

At odds floating past -150, Blinkova is 9 – 1 over the last 10 outings and fell one win short of earning the title at Tampico this weekend.

With a 21.5 showing on the total and the handicap coming in at 2.5 games, EJ Garr’s Lesia Tsurenko vs Anna Blinkova prediction leans on the favorite to produce a win and you can find his offer at -110 below.

I don’t expect anyone to be surprised to see Anna Blinkova favored in this first-round match at the Merida Open. To see the line at only -150 on the 5-seed to advance might be where the surprise comes because Tsurenko is not 100% and hasn’t played in three weeks since bowing out of Wuhan.

A right arm issue led to Tsurenko leaving the match against Magda Linette in Wuhan on October 9, as Linette was up 5 – 2 in the opening frame before the Ukrainian walked off the court in China.

Tsurenko was playing well in Wuhan before the injury, winning three matches before exiting the tournament earlier than expected. Let’s not lose track of how the Ukrainian native had been playing before Wuhan, shall we?

Ugly! Since losing in Miami on March 21, Tsurenko is 5 – 15 and had lost six straight outings before the three-game win streak in Wuhan. It is impossible to build any momentum when you aren’t playing well and on top of the arm issue I cannot recommend anyone go near Tsurenko until she proves herself.

Finding the wins over Katie Boulter and Erika Andreeva in Wuhan could have been the start of some confidence-building efforts for Tsurenko.

Anna Blinkova had won nine straight outings before losing in the finals to Stakusic at Tampico. I expect her to pick up the pieces and advance to the second round covering the -2.5 handicap against Tsurenko.

LESIA TSURENKO RECENT FORM

Lesia Tsurenko won three matches in Wuhan and the run marked the first time in a year that the Ukrainian had won more than two matches in any event on the WTA Tour.

The 120th-ranked 35-year-old has had to leave a tournament early 35 times in her career and staying on the court has never been easy.

Tsurenko is 11 – 14 on hard courts this season and has produced a 13 – 20 record in 2024. Lesia was 42 – 16 a year ago putting up her best record as a pro but all of that has gone downhill this season.

ANNA BLINKOVA RECENT FORM

Anna Blinkova is ranked 85th on the WTA Tour and won the first title of the 2024 campaign last week at a WTA100 event in Macon, Georgia (US).

Blinkova is 19 – 16 on hard courts this season and a 23 – 28 record will likely end a 2-year run of winning campaigns.

TSURENKO VS BLINKOVA H2H –  STAT OF THE MATCH

Anna Blinkova defeated Lesia Tsurenko in the only meeting between them. In 2022, Blinkova won a straight-sets affair in Romania against Tsurenko in the semifinal and Blinkova went on to win the tournament.
