Much like the last preview, we’re opposing a player who had to come through qualifying and play twice on Tuesday. This time though, we have an even more sizable talent gulf on our side.

Landaluce was one of the top juniors in the world and has a big game that once reigned in is going to take him straight to the main tour.

Radulov is another youngster, though much less prolific. His numbers aren’t that great and his game seems pretty plain. Throw in the added disadvantage of having played about 4.5 hours of tennis on Tuesday and I’m not sure he’ll have the requisite energy to play defensive tennis and cover the court point-in, point-out and deal with the power from the other side of the net.

The only concern could be a slow start from Landaluce who hasn’t played in about five weeks, so I’m going to stay away from the under and give myself a chance to cover the 4.5 games in a potential third set. That would also fit with the handicap of Radulov potentially wearing down as the match goes on. Don’t want to have an under spoiled by a tight first set, only for Landaluce to run away with the second and third frames.

Martin Landaluce Recent Form

Landaluce has only played a few tournaments since Australia – where he turned some heads reaching a high level Challenger semifinal and then qualifying for the Australian Open.

He’s lost both matches he’s played, though both Clement Chidekh and Arthur Bouquier are indoor hard court specialists and the latter beat him in a tightly-contested third set.

Also worth noting that the small sample of poor form from Landaluce has come at the Challenger level, not the ITF Tour and that he was playing guys in their preferred element.

He has big weapons, plays well across surfaces and has proven far more. It’s rare I bring up rankings as they’re not the best predictors in handicaps, but in this case, I do think the ranking discrepancy illustrates the talent divide fairly well.

Iliyan Radulov Recent Form

While Landaluce can be quite volatile and hit some poor unforced errors, Radulov is on the other end of the spectrum. While he can be forgiven for not having built his ranking yet at just 19 years old, it’s not for a lack of trying.

He’s already played five tournaments prior to this one, losing early on in each down on the lower ITF Tour.

He did manage a pair of upset victories in qualifying, though he probably should’ve lost his first match and in the second he was a set down and just managed to outlast Nick Hardt, who was also playing his second match of the day.

Data wise, Radulov’s second serve is vulnerable and his first serve isn’t generating nearly as many cheap points as he needs.

From talent to fatigue to the data, this one has all the ingredients of a lopsided defeat.
