Though Kudla has had a tough year on the whole, I’m not sure he’s fallen enough for me to have him as a pretty small favorite against Trotter just yet.
The Japanese who played collegiate tennis at Ohio State has a nice serve, has won plenty of matches this year, and has done well to earn himself a trophy already isn’t quite well-rounded enough for me to make him as competitive as the market has.
He may have posted more results on the pro circuit than Kudla’s last opponent in Johannus Monday, but I’m not sure if he’s that much better than the Brit. Yet Kudla goes from a favorite in the 1.45 range to 1.74 in this match.
That’s a bit too much respect for a still serve-oriented Trotter for me.

Denis Kudla Recent Form
As poor as the 2024 campaign has been for Kudla, he’s still won more matches than he’s lost and his recent struggles have all come against higher-end Challenger players or main tour rivals.
Richard Gasquet in a close battle, two tiebreaks against Ben Bonzi, one break of serve margin of defeat against a talented young Brit. None of these are embarrassing losses. It’s not great, but certainly not indicative of him being over the hill. Perhaps this ends up as a service battle and being on the favorite isn’t the wisest decision, but I still think from the baseline Kudla is superior to Trotter.
Well worth backing at 1.74 and I’d have this down in the 1.63 price range.
James Trotter Recent Form
Trotter has had a decent season because he’s a relative newcomer to the pro circuit.
He has a title at the Tyler Challenger and does a pretty good job of beating the players one would expect him to win against. He’s been excellent in Challenger qualifying as well. The problem is, he doesn’t have a whole lot of signature wins to lay claim to.
There is no doubting his ability to generate quick, cheap points with his first serve, but I think there is a lot of refining that needs to be done to the rest of his game before we can consider him someone who will be challenging consistently at this level.
Perhaps Kudla has regressed enough for him to have a really good chance at pulling off this upset. I’m just not sure that he has enough to his game to do so just yet though.
