The line setters can’t decide who will win the match between Kaja Juvan and Ena Shibahara, so let me tell you what to expect. 

I’ll start by saying we’re going the distance, and this will be a three-set affair between Juvan and Shibahara on Tuesday in Austin. 

Kaja Juvan is still working back to game shape after taking 13 months off from the WTA Tour. Juvan only played two matches at the 2024 Australian Open and then was away from tennis until this February.

The death of Juvan’s father took a lasting toll on the Slovenian in 2023, and it has been a long recovery which many of us can understand. The 23-year-old former #58 enters the week ranked 1106th, but that will certainly change as the season progresses. 

Juvan has earned well over $2M in her playing career, but this return has nothing to do with money. We have seen the Slovenian as a spectator at a handful of events supporting her friends, but it is nice to see her back playing again.

Ena Shibahara and Kaja Juvan had to pass qualifying to land in the main draw, and both arrived here in different fashions. Shibahara was an underdog in both qualifying matches and provided two upsets to earn her spot in the field.

Juvan was heavily favored against Louisa Chirico and Victoria Hu, and she sent both Americans packing! 

I’ll take Juvan to advance at –108 and I expect this match to do the distance so set yourself up a pair of plays!

KAJA JUVAN RECENT FORM

Kaja Juvan is 3 – 1 since returning to the WTA Tour this season. Veronika Erjavic accounts for that loss. Juvan went 1 – 1 in her first event of the season at Leszno, Poland, a WTA75 level event.

The Slovenian native ranked as high as 89th during the 2022 campaign and went 34 – 21 in 2023 before missing almost all of the 2024 season.  

ENA SHIBAHARA RECENT FORM

Ena Shibahara starts the week ranked 148th on the WTA Tour, and is 3 – 4 to start the 2025 campaign. Shibahara began the 2023 season ranked 504th and went 42 – 17 last season reaching 137th to end the year.

The Japanese native won her first ITF title last season at Spring, TX, and won both of her qualifying outings as a +200 underdog this weekend in Austin.
